Three quick reasons why Indiana beat FGCU
1. Guards lead the charge, account for big third quarter: Defensively, FGCU put a lot of focus on shutting down Zania Socka-Nguemen early on the low block. They did so, but that only opened up more opportunities for Lenee Beaumont and Shay Ciezki to take charge. Beaumont continues to ball out, as she finished with 23 points on a 9-12 clip. Ciezki added 26 of her own and finished 9-for-15. The third quarter was by far their best, as they combined for 20 points on a perfect 7-7 shooting.
2. Shutting down the Eagles: FGCU came into the game with an emphasis on the three-ball, but Indiana did well to take that away. The Hoosiers limited the Eagles to 4-of-16 from beyond the arc. IU played a sound defensive game throughout, holding FGCU to 42 percent from the field and forcing 20 turnovers in the process.
3. Turnovers, foul trouble still persistent: Although the Hoosiers played well on both sides, some of IU’s consistent problems showed back up. Indiana had both Neveah Caffey and Zania Socka-Nguemen limited with three fouls in the first half, while Shay Ciezki and Edessa Noyan also picked up two. IU also had eight turnovers to add to that. Overall, they finished with 15 turnovers total and still struggled to stay out of foul trouble. Noyan and Maya Maklusky both fouled out, and Socka-Nguemen finished with four.
