IU basketball recruiting: Hoosiers making 2022 forward Alex Karaban a high priority

Indiana was one of Alex Karaban’s first high major offers, and the Hoosiers continue to be out in front of his recruitment.

A 6-foot-8 small forward from the New Hampton School in New Hampshire, Karaban put together a strong sophomore season averaging 20 points and 8.8 rebounds per contest.

The breakout campaign piqued IU’s interest as it developed, and ultimately led to the offer in March.

Now the Indiana staff is making it clear that they want the versatile wing in Bloomington.

In a story by Dushawn London of Scout Friars, Karaban indicated that IU has been making the Massachusetts native a high priority.

“Indiana has been the school recruiting me the hardest, and just after a zoom call with them I like their campus,” Karaban told Scout Friars.  “Their style is one of my favorite styles to play with and also me, the head coach and the assistant have a strong connection already.”

New Hampton is the alma mater of IU assistant Mike Roberts and many other former IU players.  Roberts has been involved along with head coach Archie Miller.

Karaban was the lone sophomore to be named 1st Team All-NEPSAC conference AAA and he helped lead New Hampton to a NEPSAC Championship.  Karaban was the tournament MVP as New Hampton upset national powerhouse Brewster Academy.  Karaban joined four Brewster players, including former IU recruits Terrence Clarke and Matthew Cross, on the all-conference team.

Karaban has entered the national rankings since Indiana offered the scholarship.  Rivals has him slotted as the No. 99 overall player in the class of 2022.  Karaban is not yet ranked by 247Sports.

A surge of offers has come Karaban’s way this spring and summer.  His list now includes Providence, Boston College, Stanford, Purdue, Georgetown, Marquette and Penn State.
