Kaelon Black is the fourth IU football player selected in the first two days of the NFL Draft.
The running back has been taken by the San Francisco 49ers Friday, in the third round at No. 90 overall.
Cornerback D’Angelo Ponds went to the New York Jets in the second round earlier on Friday. In the first round on Thursday, quarterback Fernando Mendoza went No. 1 overall to the Las Vegas Raiders, and receiver Omar Cooper Jr. was also drafted by the Jets.
This is now the first time since 1988 that Indiana’s had four players selected in the same NFL Draft.
Black made a meteoric rise during the pre-draft process. He was not invited to the NFL Combine in February, yet still ascended to be a third round pick. He’s the third running back selected in this NFL Draft, after Notre Dame duo Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price.
The Virginia Beach, Va. native was IU’s second-leading rusher in 2025, with 1,040 yards on 186 attempts and 10 touchdowns. He’s a physical runner with a lot of burst, and the type of field vision that could help him be successful in the NFL.
Black will have a chance to be San Francisco’s No. 2 running back this coming year, behind Christian McCaffrey. He’ll likely be competing with Isaac Guerendo, Jordan James, and Patrick Taylor Jr. for opportunities.
