IU football recruiting: 2027 4-star LB Jalaythan Mayfield commits to the Hoosiers

Indiana picked up a commitment from class of 2027 linebacker Jalaythan Mayfield on Friday afternoon.

Mayfield picked IU over Georgia and Miami (Florida).

“It’s a great place. Coach Cig does a great job with the players,” Mayfield said on a live commitment on CBS Sports.  “They take 3, 2-star guys, unranked guys, and make them national champions, so that’s the place to be developed.  Miami, Georgia, great programs, they develop players as well, but nobody does it like Indiana.”

Based on the average of the national recruiting outlets, Mayfield is a 4-star prospect, the No. 229 overall player in the 2027 class, and the No. 20 linebacker in the rising senior class.  Rivals pegs him as the No. 12 overall linebacker.

The 6-foot-1 and 235-pound Mayfield attends Lincolnton, H.S. in Lincolnton, N.C.  As a junior he posted 152 tackles (includes 26 tackles for a loss), six sacks, six forced fumbles, a blocked punt and a blocked field goal. He also contributed 13 rushing touchdowns and 343 rushing yards on offense.

Rivals’ Charles Power provided this scouting report of Mayfield on his profile page:

“Thickly-built, instinctive linebacker who is a tackle machine on Friday nights. Measured in at a shade over 6-foot-1 and around 235 pounds. Touts plus length for the position with arms that measure around 33 inches. Highly productive player who lives in opposing backfields. Intelligent and instinctive. Reads plays and will often beat offensive players to their spot. Uses his length to stack and shed. Motor runs hot and makes second-effort plays. Quality tackler who shows good form. Also shows ability as a pass rusher and blitzer. Finished his junior season with 152 tackles and 26 tackles for loss. Also lines up at tight end and as a short yardage ball-carrier out of the wildcat, rushing for 343 yards and 13 touchdowns. A quicker than fast athlete and top-end speed appears below average compared to fellow highly-ranked linebackers. Has the look of a high-floor prospect who could grow into a defensive captain at middle linebacker in college.”

Mayfield’s junior season highlights are below.

Mayfield is now the 13th commit in Indiana’s developing 2027 class.  He’s the fourth 4-star and the second linebacker.  Here are the 12 verbal pledges who preceded him, with links to more information on each of them:

    1. Myles Smith, Farmington, Mich., Edge (4-star)
    2. Mason McDermott, Noblesville, Ind., OT (4-star)

    4. Da’Jon Talley-Rhodes, Washington D.C., RB (3-star)
