BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – After a 29-point victory over FGCU in the season opener, IU women’s basketball dominated once again on Friday, defeating Southern Illinois 96-55.
The Hoosiers got off to a red hot start. Maya Makalusky hit a pair of triples in the opening 90 seconds of the contest. Supplemented by a 15-2 run out of the gate, Indiana led 36-14 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter was also filled with highlights for the Cream and Crimson. During a possession midway through the quarter, Lenée Beaumont, with the shot clock winding down, pulled from the logo and knocked down a miracle 3-pointer. The crowd went absolutely bonkers.
As a whole, IU finished 10-for-22 from beyond the arc, with five different players knocking down a triple.
Six different Hoosiers scored double-digit points on the night, all scoring between 11 and 14 points, with Beaumont being Indiana’s leading scorer.
Forward Zania Socka-Nguemen picked up her first double-double performance of the season, racking up 11 points and 12 rebounds, to go along with four assists.
The Hoosiers also dominated on the glass, out-rebounding the Salukis 51-27. Fifteen of those rebounds were on the offensive glass, leading to 14 second-chance points for IU.
Freshman Addy Nyemchek delivered a standout performance in her second career game, stuffing the stat sheet with 12 points, five rebounds, two blocks, two steals and an assist.
One downside to IU’s night was the third quarter, as they turned the ball a whopping six times. The other three quarters were extremely clean from a turnovers perspective, as the Hoosiers only committed seven in the first, second and fourth quarters combined.
After shooting just 60% from the free-throw line on Monday, Indiana made 24 of 33 from the line on Friday, good for a percentage clip of 73%.
The Hoosiers will be back at Assembly Hall on Monday, Nov. 9 to face Bradley. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised on BTN Plus.
