BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – IU women’s basketball started their 2026-2027 campaign on a strong note, defeating the FGCU Eagles, 79-50 at Assembly Hall.
Indiana did a fantastic job of spreading the ball around, as 11 different Hoosiers scored throughout the contest. Third-year forward Zania Socka-Nguemen led the way with 13 points, along with seven rebounds.
Veteran Lenee Beaumont and Iowa State transfer Alisa Williams joined Socka-Nguemen in double figures, scoring 10 and 12 points, respectively.
The Hoosiers also played outstanding defense, specifically on the perimeter, holding FGCU to 3-for-26 shooting from beyond the arc.
There were a couple of downsides to IU’s performance on Tuesday night, with the two main ones being turnovers and free-throw shooting.
The Hoosiers racked up 17 turnovers, much to the chagrin of head coach Teri Moren. They also made just 15-of-25 free throw attempts. Moren said postgame that her team is “not a 60% free-throw shooting team”.
Indiana’s depth was on full display, something they did not have a season ago, oftentimes only playing six or seven players for an entire contest.
Both teams showed signs of sloppiness throughout the game, but ultimately, IU made fewer mistakes. A 15-0 run in the third quarter allowed the Hoosiers to eventually pull away.
Indiana will be back home on Friday night to take on Southern Illinois. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised on Big Ten Plus.
