Indiana has already assembled a strong recruiting class of 2027, headlined by in-state 5-star wide receiver Monshun Sales and a total of eight players ranked among the national top-500 at Rivals.
Rivals says IU’s 2027 class is No. 26 overall nationally, which makes it the program’s best-ever in the rankings era according to that outlet.
But as is often the case, late cycle maneuvering will lead to some flips before the December early signing period.
There are at least two players in the senior class who IU is actively trying to flip.
Purdue cornerback commit Roman Combs is in the midst of a strong senior season, and he has caught the eye of Indiana and other top programs.
The 6-foot-4 Combs visited IU for the Ohio State game. The West Chester, Ohio product (Lakota West H.S.) isn’t ranked high — he’s a 3-star and ranked the No. 109 overall cornerback in his class.
But he’s likely due for a rankings bump after his 50 tackle, 5 interception regular season has brought the recent attention from Indiana and others. According to Allen Trieu of Rivals, Combs will also visit Texas Tech, and he also has interest from Michigan.
Because of his big frame, Combs could be a candidate to play safety in college. IU has two safeties and three cornerbacks verbally committed in the 2027 class.
Indiana will get another visit from a 2027 target this weekend in offensive tackle Conner Rutherford.
The Hoosiers were after Rutherford in the spring and summer before he committed to North Carolina State. He reopened his recruitment this week following the coaching change there.
Trieu says Rutherford will be in Bloomington this weekend as ESPN’s College GameDay is on campus ahead of the 3:30 p.m. ET game against Minnesota. Rutherford hails from Chillicothe, Ohio.
The Rivals industry average says the 6-foot-6 and 295-pound Rutherford is a 3-star, the No. 729 overall player and the No. 53 offensive tackle.
In addition to Rutherford, Trieu named five class of 2028 targets expected at Indiana this weekend for the Minnesota game:
- Jevyn Severson, No. 73 overall, No. 7 tight end
- Carte Ligon, No. 148 overall, No. 7 athlete
- Geo McKnight, No. 192 overall, No. 19 safety
- Zachary Belyeu, No. 275 national, No. 16 running back
- Devin Phillips, No. 657 overall, No. 80 defensive lineman
