IU basketball recruiting: Class of 2024 names to know — PG Daquan Davis

After Jalen Hood-Schifino’s impressive one-and-done season running the show at Indiana, it feels like an anomaly the Hoosiers would be unable to land a point guard in the 2024 class.

After all, Hood-Schifino’s success at IU was a hot topic on the recruiting trail all spring and summer.

Enter 2024 point guard Daquan Davis into the conversation.  Davis decommitted from Providence on Sunday, and On3’s Joe Tipton named only Indiana as a team to watch.

Indiana could be a team to watch here.

Hoosiers recently missed on 5⭐️ Boogie Fland (Kentucky). Davis is now one of the top available PGs.

Keep in mind, the early signing period opens in 10 days (Nov. 8). https://t.co/3wq2b4jWQp

And here’s where the Davis conversation gets very interesting.  The Baltimore, Md. native was a high school teammate of IU priority 2024 target Derik Queen when they were freshmen at St. Frances Academy in 2020-21, and the pair have been AAU teammates on the Under Armour Circuit.  Moreover, their Team Thrill AAU program director is known to be influential in Queen’s decision making process.

Queen is expected to decide between IU, Maryland, Houston and Kansas in the next week or two, and based on Tipton’s comments, Davis could be on the same timeline despite just decommitting from Providence.

Davis selected Providence in June from a final four that also included Maryland, Mississippi State and Notre Dame. The four-star prospect claimed offers from the likes of Illinois, Penn State, Texas A&M, Villanova, Kansas State and others.  Led by assistant coach Kenya Hunter, Indiana was involved in the periphery for a couple years.

Davis is the No. 110 overall prospect and No. 15 point guard in the 2024 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking,

The 6-foot-1 Davis attends the Overtime Elite program in Atlanta, and he’s viewed as a player trending favorably relative to his ranking.  A true point guard, he’s averaged 12.8 points and 4.2 assists in preseason games at Overtime this fall.  Overtime, if you don’t know, includes professionals along with elite high school talent.  After watching the Overtime Elite Combine, 247Sports’ Adam Finkelstein called Davis the best guard in the loaded program.  That outlet’s Eric Bossi wrote this after watching Davis at the Overtime event:

“He brought all the juice, competed at an intense level, encouraged his teammates and refused to let energy die down on his watch. He’s a tough lead guard who plays low to the ground, has burst and is just enough of a shot maker to keep defenders honest.”

Davis spent his junior season at St. John’s College High and was the Washington, D.C., Player of the Year, according to MaxPreps.  He led the Cadets to a 30-3 record, the Washington Catholic Athletic Conference tournament title and a national top 10 ranking.  Davis averaged 16.2 points, 4.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists and 1.6 steals while shooting 42.3 percent from the field.
