Sydney Parrish progressing towards return from foot injury

Sydney Parrish is getting closer to returning.

The senior guard has missed six straight games for No. 14 Indiana women’s basketball after suffering a foot injury in practice. She initially wore a walking boot and used crutches to move around, but shed the crutches last week.

After Sunday’s win over Purdue, IU head coach Teri Moren shared a positive update on Parrish’s status.

“She is, she’s making a lot of progress. As a matter of fact, she did a little bit of our shootaround today, and that was great to see,” Moren said on Sunday. “It was great to have her back in a uniform and not in a boot, two basketball shoes. She’s making progress. I don’t know if we’ll see her on Wednesday, but she just keeps feeling a little bit better every day.”

Indiana faces Wisconsin at Kohl Center on Wednesday, an 8 p.m. tip on Peacock. So while Parrish may not be ready to play in Madison, Moren’s comments suggest a return next week could be in play.

The Hoosiers have five games left in the regular season, including Wisconsin. They play at Illinois on Feb. 19, host No. 3 Iowa on Feb. 22, play at Northwestern on Feb. 27, and host Maryland on March 3.

IU has gone 5-1 with Parrish sidelined. Lexus Bargesser has filled the vacancy in the starting lineup, and she’s performed admirably. The sophomore has averaged 6.2 points, 4.7 rebounds, 3.8 assists, and 1.7 steals per game over the last six contests, while playing 32 minutes per game.

Parrish, in 17 games this season, has averaged 10.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, and 2.4 assists per game. She was excelling in Big Ten play, with 14.1 points, 5.9 rebounds, 2.4 assists, and 1.4 steals per game in seven contests, while shooting 50 percent from 3-point range on 5.4 attempts per game.
