Legal proceedings involving the eligibility of IU football’s Stephen Daley and Kellan Wyatt ended today without a ruling.
Meanwhile, a new door of opportunity exists for IU basketball center Sam Alexis.
Daley and Wyatt received a temporary restraining order from a Monroe County court that cleared a path for them to play the first two weeks of the 2026 season, but they are now seeking an injunction to extend their eligibility until their lawsuit against the NCAA can be heard. Alexis has joined dozens of new plaintiffs in the same Monroe County case.
A Monday hearing intended to decide on whether an injunction was appropriate ended with the court seeking additional information. The proceeding is set to resume on Thursday.
“The Court directs parties to submit proposed findings and conclusions of law. Findings are due by the 17th day of September 2026,” court records indicate. “The Court will grant more time if parties agree to extend the TRO.”
Whether Daley and Wyatt are eligible for this weekend’s game against Western Kentucky hinges on the receiving an injunction this week, or an extension of the temporary restraining order.
Alexis has presumably withdrawn from a Tennessee court case where an injunction was obtained then successfully stayed by the NCAA pending appeal.
All three players are continuing to practice with their respective teams while the legal matter is sorted out.
The legal wranglings come after the NCAA did not extend its new five-year eligibility rule passed this summer to members of the class of 2022 who had just exhausted their eligibility in four years.
In issuing the temporary restraining order, the court determined the plaintiffs had shown by verified pleading and supporting evidence that immediate and irreparable injury would occur before notice could be served and a hearing held.
IU swimmers Owen McDonald and Zalán Sárkány, and volleyball player Avry Tatum are part of the case as well.
