Report: 2020 Maui Invitational still proceeding as scheduled

Don’t cancel those Thanksgiving week plans.

The 2020 Maui Invitational is proceeding as scheduled for now according to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

Rothstein provided the update on a Twitter post on Wednesday morning.

Sources: The 2020 Maui Invitational is proceeding to be held as scheduled in Hawaii. Contingency plans are being discussed if circumstances arise due to coronavirus.

Field includes North Carolina, Indiana, Texas, Providence, Stanford, Alabama, Davidson, and UNLV.

It has been widely speculated that the event will be moved to the mainland due to the COVID-19 pandemic.   Individuals traveling to Hawaii have been subject to a 14-day quarantine upon arrival for several months.

Hawaii Governor David Inge announced in late June that beginning August 1st travelers who have a valid negative COVID-19 test prior to arriving will not be subject to the 14-day mandatory quarantine.

Alabama, Davidson, Indiana, North Carolina, Providence, Stanford, Texas and UNLV are scheduled to convene in Maui for the 37th annual Tournament, which will be contested November 23-25 at the historic Lahaina Civic Center on the island of Maui.

Although the event is still proceeding as scheduled, it is not clear to what extent fans will be allowed to attend the games.  That may not be known until the weeks leading up to the Tournament, and could change at any moment if there is a spike in COVID-19 cases.

Indiana will make its seventh Maui Jim Maui Invitational appearance (1990, 1994, 1998, 2002, 2008, 2015).  Indiana holds an 11-8 all-time record in the Tournament.

The Hoosiers will be seeking their second Tournament championship title, with the first coming in 2002.

The programs heading out to Maui in 2020 boast a combined six Tournament titles, led by North Carolina’s four championships.

Providence owns the first-ever Tournament championship from 1984; both the Friars and the Davidson Wildcats were members of the inaugural Tournament field.

Indiana, North Carolina, and Texas rank in the top-20 all-time winningest programs. Davidson, Indiana, North Carolina, Providence, and Texas each own at least two NCAA Tournament appearances since 2015.
