Indiana has one of the more accomplished defenders in the transfer portal on campus.
Rutgers transfer weakside linebacker Mohamed Toure posted a photo in Bloomington on his Instagram page on Friday evening.
At 6-2 and 236 pounds, the now seventh-year linebacker was on the Butkus Award preseason watch list ahead of the 2024 season.
That was after Toure had 93 tackles (10 for loss) and five sacks in 2023. He posted a career-high 11 stops versus Maryland and had an interception against Ohio State. He was named a Comeback Player of the Year semifinalist, earned honorable mention All-Big Ten recognition in the coaches and media votes, and rated as the No. 7 linebacker in the Big Ten by Pro Football Focus.
But he tore his ACL in an August 2024 practice, his second torn ACL in three years. He played in the 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023 seasons, but missed the 2022 and 2024 with the injuries. 2019 and 2020 didn’t count because of a redshirt year and Covid year. With medical waivers he could get two years of eligibility back including 2025.
The Pleasantville, N.J. product enters 2025 with 37 games of collegiate experience, totaling 168 tackles with 22.5 for loss and 13.5 sacks. He has forced three fumbles, has broken up three passes, collected two interceptions and recovered a fumble so far.
Penn State and Miami (Fla.) are two of the other main contenders for Toure.
Indiana has All-American Aiden Fisher returning at one linebacker spot, while sophomore Rolijah Hardy was the spring starter next to him. Isaiah Jones is also in the mix for snaps as the Hoosiers look to replace Jailin Walker, who signed as an undrafted free agent with the Las Vegas Raiders last week.
