Indiana went deep into the depth chart on Saturday in connection with its 55-0 win over Howard.
The full snap counts are below.
But first, here are some notes from the game:
Quarterback
Third-stringer Tyler Cherry got more snaps than backup Grant Wilson. And although the game wasn’t close, both got a chance to throw the ball.
The appearance was Cherry’s first in over two full calendar years after he came back from a serious knee injury that was thought to be career-ending. He threw the first passes of his college career, and the got some tough love from coach Curt Cignetti.
“It was good to get Tyler in the game,” Cignetti said. “But, you know, he missed his first two throws. He’s got to make those throws. At this level you got to make those throws.
“Then he did make the one. That was a nice throw to Woz (Jackson Wasserstrom).”
Running back
Both Turbo Richard and Lee Beebe, Jr. went over 100 yards. They became IU’s first 100-yard rushing duo in the same game since a win over Rutgers in 2017 (Morgan Ellison,149; Cole Gest, 104).
Richard had the top offensive PFF grade on the team. Their data says he forced 10 missed tackles on 11 carries, and 76 of his 108 yards came after contact.
Beebe, Jr. had more than double the snaps of Richard, but that doesn’t seem like anything to read into.
IU only has four healthy running backs on the roster, and second-year Sean Cuono and first-year Jayreon Campbell splits snaps. Campbell had the more productive outing. 31 of his 36 yards came after contact. It’s not clear if either of them will see snaps in meaningful action.
Wide Receiver
Shazz Preston only played four snaps in week one but was tied for the most by a receiver against Howard. Davion Chandler played 29 more snaps week-over-week.
Interestingly, Preston started over Nick Marsh, who played into the fourth quarter.
No surprise — Charlie Becker had the top overall PFF grade among the receivers.
After the game Curt Cignetti referred to Becker, Marsh, Morris, Chandler and Preston as the top five. Lebron Bond did not play.
IU had no drops.
Tight End
It’s pretty clear Andrew Barker and Brock Schott are rotating as the staff looks for the top option. This is not a position where a rotation was used the last two years. Barker started and had more snaps in this game after Schott started and had more snaps in the opener. Their grades were very similar at PFF.
Trevor Gibbs did not play for the second straight week due to an injury. Blake Thiry and Parker Elmore both saw their first snaps of the season.
Offensive Line
First-year 6-foot-7 and 320-pound tackle Kenton Mondeau got the first snaps of his career — 14 at left tackle. Evan Parker also saw his first snaps, splitting backup left guard duties with Matt Marek.
The top overall PFF run blocking grade went to left guard Drew Evans, and the top overall passing grade went to left tackle Carter Smith.
Indiana only gave up one QB pressure in pass blocking for the entire game.
