Linebackers
Rolijah Hardy had an incredible game as a pass rusher. In just 10 pass rush opportunities, he got pressure on the quarterback six times and sacked Tommy Carr twice. One of the sacks was Michigan’s final play from scrimmage in regulation. Hardy also led the team with nine tackles.
Isaiah Jones had the best run defense grade on the team. His average depth of tackle was just 1.0 yards beyond the line of scrimmage, aided by 1.5 tackles for loss. He also only allowed 3.5 yards on the receptions against him in coverage.
Michigan went with a lot of two tight end personnel which created a heavy workload for freshman linebacker Jacob Savage. He delivered with seven tackles including a tackle for loss. He also had two pressures on three pass rush attempts.
Safeties
Amare Ferrell had the top overall PFF defensive grade on the team, and the top coverage grade. He had his third interception in two weeks, to go with six tackles including four that were characterized as a “stop” or failure by the offense. Ferrell allowed two receptions but they only went for three yards. He did not miss any tackles. In fact no one in the secondary missed a tackle, and as a team IU only had four missed tackles for the game.
Preston Zachman had the best tackling grade on the team.
Cornerbacks
Jamari Sharpe was targeted just twice the entire game and allowed no receptions.
A.J. Harris has been a full-time starter for the last two weeks and IU’s cornerback play has improved. He was targeted the most by Michigan and had two pass breakups. He tipped the ball Ferrell intercepted for a pass breakup. Carr completed 5 of 8 passes when throwing Harris’ way. Those receptions averaged 12 yards.
Harris also had eight tackles with no misses. His physicality stood out.
