Indiana improved to 7-1 with a 13-6 overtime win at Michigan Saturday — the program’s first win in Ann Arbor since 1967.
The full offensive snap counts from the game are below.
But first, here are some position-by-position notes on the offense coming out of the contest:
Quarterback
QB Josh Hoover had the worst offensive grade on the team according to PFF. That outlet has no adjustment for injuries of course, and Hoover is dealing with something as coach Curt Cignetti confirmed on Saturday. He appeared to be bothered by his shoulder area at one point Saturday.
It’s unclear whether the deep ball was off the table for Hoover, but Indiana never really attempted any long passes.
Running back
The running game was effective at times but lacked splash plays. The long run was 17 yards. Indiana averaged 4.0 yards per carry. It probably didn’t help that the Hoosiers abandoned the pass in the second half.
Turbo Richard got more snaps than Lee Beebe, Jr. for the second straight week, and Richard was the higher-graded back by PFF. But Beebe, Jr. had 4.7 yards per carry, vs. 3.6 for Richard. Beebe, Jr. had a better yards after contact average of 4.08 per carry, while Richard had more total yards after contact (64). Richard forced four missed tackles.
Both backs earned good pass blocking grades in limited work.
Khobie Martin was in uniform but did not play.
Wide Receiver
It was a tough day for the wide receivers, as IU attempted just one second half pass, and no receivers caught a pass after halftime.
Nick Marsh and Charlie Becker were targeted on 12 of IU’s 17 throws. Among the receivers, Becker had the best PFF grade. He had a leaping grab that made the highlight reels. Marsh had a drop.
One thing that stood out was the absence of Davion Chandler. Whether it was his fumble against Ohio State, or some other factor, the second-year did not play at all for the first time this season. In recent weeks he had split snaps with Morris and Preston. Cignetti has said recently he’s looking for someone to emerge from that group of three.
Tight End
Brock Schott had a 21-yard catch in overtime that set up the winning score. It was his third grab for 54 yards on the season. That was the only time a tight end was targeted the entire game.
Only Schott and Trevor Gibbs saw tight end snaps, with Gibbs earning more of them. That’s been the case for several weeks.
Schott had a better run blocking PFF grade than Gibbs. Only Gibbs saw pass blocking snaps, and he earned a respectable grade.
Offensive Line
Right guard Joe Brunner had the best run blocking grade on the team according to PFF, while center Bray Lynch had the best pass blocking mark.
PFF says IU only allowed two pressures in the game — both by left guard Drew Evans. Everyone on the line earned a good pass blocking grade except Evans.
