IU basketball recruiting: Hoosiers offer emerging 2022 South Carolina forward Noah Clowney

Indiana doesn’t have a long history of successfully recruiting players from South Carolina, but with a new staff of assistants the Hoosiers are venturing into untapped geography.

Noah Clowney is one of two big men from the Southeast who received Indiana offers over the weekend as assistant coach Yasir Rosemond helps the program establish more of a presence in the area.

Clowney announced an offer from IU on his Twitter page.

With Clowney, Indiana appears to be involved relatively early in a recruitment that appears destined to accelerate rapidly this spring and summer.

While he has historically been described as a center, the 6-foot-10 Clowney’s rise correlates to his demonstration of abilities to handle the ball and shoot on the perimeter.  Because of his length and rim protection abilities, Clowney might end up in the middle of a four-out, one-in system, but he will be able to play as a versatile stretch-4 or 5 who can score inside and out while guarding the post and blocking shots.

Rivals’ national writer Jamie Shaw gave this evaluation of Clowney after watching him last week.

“Clowney is a big who moves very well,” Shaw wrote.  “His fluidity, explosion, and tenacity in defending the ball really stick out. He also knocked down threes, showed comfort going over his left shoulder and provided a nice vertical spacing threat on lobs. Playing for Team Dickerson this summer, look for Clowney to enter the Rivals150 in our next release.”

Clowney attends Dorman High School in Roebuck, S.C.  There he helped lead Dorman to the state finals while averaging 10 points, 8 rebounds and 1.4 blocks per game.

Clowney plays for Team Dickerson for spring and summer AAU basketball.  He has been emerging on the national level this spring, and is currently undervalued by the recruiting services.  247Sports has him unranked and lists Clowney as the No. 33 power forward in the class of 2022, while Rivals has him as an unranked 3-star.

Indiana, Clemson, Georgia Tech, Providence and Appalachian State have all extended offers within the last week, joining Xavier and Virginia Tech.  Rosemond, who is well connected in the Southeast, is leading the recruitment for Indiana.
