Our “Names to Know” series provides a quick look at IU basketball recruiting targets as their names emerge on the trail.

    —————————

Jonathan Powell was already on the radar of Division One programs, but a fast start to his spring has supercharged his recruitment.

After he scored 45 points against a good U16 Indiana Elite squad, Powell got an offer on the spot from Illinois, and according to Travis Graf of Rivals, had Indiana wanting to bring him on campus for a visit.

This is how 247Sports’ Eric Bossi described Powell’s performance.

“One of the better performances of anybody we saw on the 16U level came from Powell,” Bossi wrote.  “A smooth 6-foot-4 scorer from Ohio, he was banging jump shots from all over, moving around the floor with grace and exuding confidence.”

This is how On3’s Jamie Shaw described Powell’s big day.

“The shooting guard has a good frame and played comfortably on the ball in the half-court,” Shaw wrote.  “His ability to get to his spots off the bounce and his confidence made the 45 points look effortless.”

Powell had an offer from hometown school Dayton before his sophomore season, and he has added offers from Illinois and Texas A&M over the last two weeks.

He averaged 16.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game and hit 38 percent of his threes as a sophomore at Dayton Chaminade Julienne H.S.  He averaged 13.1 points as a freshman.

Powell is an especially intriguing prospect for Indiana, because according to reports he has transferred to Centerville H.S. where he will play alongside IU 2023 commit Gabe Cupps next year.

Powell does not appear in the early class of 2024 rankings.

Given his close ties to the area, you can expect IU assistant coach Brian Walsh to take the lead for IU with Powell.
