    Bethune-Cookman’s Reggie Theus

Reggie Theus has certainly been around the block when it comes to head coaching resumes. While in Division I, Theus has a 151-207 career record across three stints.

Theus had a successful playing career before coaching, with over 14 seasons in the NBA. Theus began his coaching career as an assistant for Louisville until 2005. Theus was hired in the Spring of 2005 to become the head coach of New Mexico State. After two seasons, Theus was hired as the head coach of the Sacramento Kings, but he only lasted one full season.

Theus had other stints as an NBA assistant with the Timberwolves and head coach of a few G-League teams. Theus returned to college in 2013 as head coach of Cal State Northridge, where he spent five seasons. In July of 2021, Theus was named both head coach and athletic director of Bethune-Cookman. Last season was his best, as he led the Warriors to a 17-16 record.

Indiana Game Notes (via Indiana Athletics)

    OPENING TIP

    • Bethune-Cookman is led by 14.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 1.5 steals per game from senior wing Jakobi Heady. The Chicago native has hit 11-of-24 (45.8%) from behind the 3-point line through six games played.
    • Redshirt junior guard Arterio Morris, a former McDonald’s All-American, has averaged 14.0 points, 5.7 rebounds, and a team-best 3.9 assists per game. Junior forward Quentin Heady (12.4 points) and senior forward Daniel Rouzan (11.7 points) round out the Wildcats that averaged 10.0-plus points per night.
    • Bethune opened the season with an upset bid that fell just short in a 95-90 (OT) result at Auburn. The lead changed hands 31 times during the contest.

    SERIES HISTORY

    • Indiana defeated Bethune-Cookman by a score of 101-49 in the lone matchup between the two programs on Nov. 10, 2022, at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.
    • Trayce Jackson-Davis led a group of four Hoosiers in double-figures with 21 points on 9-of-10 shooting from the floor.
    • The Hoosiers hold a perfect 12-0 record against teams in the SWAC, which includes a 98-51 victory against Alabama A&M in the season opener.

No. 228 Bethune-Cookman’s KenPom notable numbers:

    (out of 365 teams)

    Tempo – No. 246 (Offense No. 289 / Defense No. 147)

    Offensive Efficiency – No. 227

    • Bethune-Cookman’s effective field goal percentage sits at 48.3 percent (No. 252). They’re shooting 33.9 percent from three (No. 156) and 47.1 percent from two (No. 284).
    • The Wildcats take care of the ball pretty well with a 15.2 percent rate (No. 82).
    • Bethune-Cookman does not get a lot of production from free throws. Points from the line account for 15.5 percent of their points (No. 330), and they shoot 61.7 percent as a team (No. 350).
    • They’re largely a team that relies on the inside, as twos account for 57.1 percent of their points (No. 24).

    Defensive Efficiency – No. 229

    • Opponents are shooting a 53.5 percent effective field goal percentage against the Wildcats (No. 254). Teams have shot 33.3 percent from three (No. 189) and 55.4 percent from two (No. 262).
    • Turnovers are a low spot for Bethune-Cookman. Their 14.4 percent turnover percentage is 322nd in the nation.
    • They give up offensive rebounds at a 35.4 percent rate (No. 286).
    • Fouls could also be a problem. Teams are also getting to the free-throw line at a 45.5 percent rate on field goals, which is 313th in Division I.

    OG’s Pick

    Overall: 7-0

I can’t imagine Indiana has any issues here. Bethune-Cookman has had some close games against good teams, but if Indiana produces offensively, this should be another one in the win column. The question, in my mind, is more about how much they win by.

    Pick: Indiana 92 – Bethune Cookman 68
