Former IU basketball 2020 recruiting target Matt Cross leaving Miami

Former Indiana target Matt Cross will no longer be with the Miami (Fla.) basketball program, effective immediately, Hurricanes coach Jim Larranaga announced through the program’s Twitter account on Thursday.

Cross, a 6-foot-6, 225-pound forward from Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, started nine of the 14 games he appeared in and averaged 26.4 minutes per game. He was averaging 6.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game. He made 45 percent of his field goals (35 of 78) including 40 percent of his 3-point shots (20 of 50). He also posted 20 assists against 21 turnovers and 11 steals.

However, Cross was held out of Miami’s 81-59 loss to Florida State on Wednesday night. Larranaga said it was a coach’s decision, suggesting it was not injury related. The Hurricanes have lost three straight games and four of their last five and are 6-9 this season with a 2-8 ACC record.

Indiana was one of 13 schools to offer Cross a scholarship. He took visits to IU, Butler, Florida, South Carolina and Texas A&M. Iowa, Georgia Tech and Penn State were the other Power 5 schools to offer him a scholarship.

Cross is a former four-star, top-100 recruit in the 2020 recruiting class according to the 247Sports composite rankings.

UPDATE:  Jeff Goodman of Stadium is reporting that the decision was made by Miami, not Cross.

FRIDAY UPDATE:  A message from the Cross family —

#iubb, Florida and South Carolina were the main schools at the end….at least for basketball. https://t.co/qJ7LTDX55C
