With Indiana’s main class of 2022 targets beginning to come into focus, it is time to bring back our annual profile pages for the priority prospects.  These pages are a one-stop shop for all the latest information on the key IU basketball recruits you want to know about.

To help you stay abreast of all of the latest news for Indiana’s top 2022 recruiting targets, you can refer back to all of our recruit profile pages from our recruiting drop down menu.

At the bottom of each profile page is all recent coverage of the individual player, including both original reporting by The Daily Hoosier and links to key information from other outlets.  These profile pages will be updated regularly with new content, so check back often for updates.  The bottom line — if you want to know the latest with a priority class of 2022 recruit, these pages are the place to go.

This 2022 profile page covers Maryland based wing Tyrell Ward.

    ESSENTIALS

    Status —  COMMITTED – XAVIER

Hometown – Hyattsville, Maryland (DeMatha H.S.)
Position – Small forward / wing
    Height – 6-foot-6
    Weight – 185
    AAU – New World (Adidas)
    247 Sports Composite Rating – 4-star / No. 52
Primary Competition – Maryland, LSU, Georgia, Virginia Tech, Xavier, Miami, Villanova and Georgetown.

Timeline — Ward wants to take visits in June and also the late summer and make a decision before his senior season.

Indiana Connections — Indiana assistant coach Kenya Hunter is the constant in Ward’s recruitment that dates back to the Archie Miller era.  Hunter has strong ties to the Washington D.C. metro area.  Ward attends the same high school that produced IU star Victor Oladipo.

Numbers — Ward averaged 19.3 points, 9.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists per contest as a junior at DeMatha against a high end schedule.  He shot 46 percent from 3-point range.

    COACH AND RECRUITING SERVICE ASSESSMENTS

“He can guard every position on the floor, except for maybe a 7-foot center,” Jones said. “He can guard point guards and stay in front of them. His length bothers them. He can guard wings. He can guard face-up 4s. He’s extremely versatile and he embraces being that.”

    — Former DeMatha coach Mike Jones to The Daily Hoosier

“Ward is a lengthy, slashing wing who really excels when the game opens up and he can get out and run. Over the past six, or so, months Ward has started to tighten up his ball skills and the range on his jump shot. Ward is a good cutter, off the ball and he has the upside to really excel on the defensive end, both on the ball and in the passing lanes. There is upside here and as he continues to add weight and tighten his game, his production should continue to grow.”

    — Jamie Shaw / Rivals national analyst

“Has gotten significantly better over the last year. He’s got length he’s got athleticism and he’s got enough creative game that he deserves consideration for the top 50 in his class. While he is still on the lean side, Ward is getting stronger and it is helping.”

    — Eric Bossi / 247Sports national analyst

    QUOTABLE

“They will be playing an NBA style. Head coach Mike Woodson told me that he is going to bring that style he had with the New York Knicks to Indiana, and I am really excited to see that when I go up there.”

    — Ward to Rivals
