The coaches and ESPN concur with everyone else — IU basketball is top-15 and the Big Ten favorite

The college basketball coaches poll came out on Tuesday along with ESPN’s Big Ten preview, representing what we hope are the final preseason prognostications we report on this fall.

In the first USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll, IU is ranked No. 14 — in the neighborhood where virtually everyone has the Hoosiers going into the 2022-23 campaign.

Indiana is also the top team from the Big Ten in the coaches poll, again much like they have been across virtually every major national forecast.  Also in the poll from the Big Ten are No. 22 Michigan and No. 23 Illinois.  Purdue, Michigan State, Iowa, Wisconsin, Ohio State and Rutgers are also receiving votes, in that order.

IU nonconference foes North Carolina (No. 1), Kansas (5), Arizona (13) are also ranked, while Xavier is receiving votes.

Meanwhile, ESPN published its Big Ten basketball preview on Tuesday, and all four of Myron Medcalf, Jeff Borzello, John Gasaway and Joe Lunardi pick the Hoosiers as the favorite to win the league crown in March.  They each picked forward Trayce Jackson-Davis as the preseason conference player of the year as well.

Between the four analysts, each of Illinois, Michigan, Iowa, Ohio State, Purdue and Michigan State form the top half of the league.  They like Illinois’ Terrence Shannon as the league’s top newcomer.

Indiana’s first preseason exhibition is Saturday at 3 p.m. vs. Marian.  The Hoosiers open the 2022-23 season on Nov. 7 vs. Morehead State.  Both games are in Bloomington.
