Recapping the Performance of IU’s Main 2019 Recruiting Targets on the Spring Circuits

The primary spring AAU circuits (Nike EYBL/Adidas Gauntlet/NY2LA) have wrapped-up play until their respective championship events in July.  Today we take a look back out how the main Indiana recruiting targets in the class of 2019 performed cumulatively through the end of the spring sessions.

Performance on these circuits is often a good indicator of readiness for the next level, as the competition here is much steeper than at the high school level.  Several IU targets have seen their profiles emerge over the last two months.

With one exception as noted below, these are all players that IU has already offered and is in close regular contact.

Click on each player’s name for all of our coverage of each player.

    TRAYCE JACKSON-DAVIS (INDY HEAT)

Hometown – Greenwood, Indiana (Center Grove)
    Position – Power Forward
    Height – 6-foot-8
    Weight – 215
    247 Sports Composite Rating – 5-star
Primary Competition – Purdue, Michigan State, Iowa, Ohio State

    2018 Nike EYBL Stats:  19.3 PPG, 7.4 RPG, 1.6 APG, 2.1 BPG

Notes:  Jackson-Davis seems to be improving daily and his star continues to shine brighter.  Several observers have noted an improving off-hand and mid-range game.  He is an elite finisher around the rim, can be an imposing shot blocker, and has the physical size to hold his ground in the paint.

    TRENDON WATFORD (GEORGIA STARS)

Hometown – Birmingham, Alabama (Mountain Brook)
    Position – Small Forward
    Height – 6-foot-8
    Weight – 215
    247 Sports Composite Rating – 5-star
Primary Competition – Alabama, Florida State, LSU, Memphis

    2018 Nike EYBL Stats:  17.1 PPG, 8.0 RPG, 2.2 APG, 1.1 BPG

Notes:  Watford has a lethal combination of 3-point shooting and ability to get to the rim.  He has posted really impressive rebounding numbers this spring, showing a willingness to work hard.  He may not be as elite of an athlete as some of the other players here, but he makes up for it with intangibles such as a balanced attack, steady play and craftiness.

    KEION BROOKS, JR. (INDY HEAT)

Hometown – Fort Wayne, Indiana (North Side)
    Position – Small Forward
    Height – 6-foot-8
    Weight – 190
    247 Sports Composite Rating – 5-star
Primary Competition – Kentucky, Michigan State, Louisville, Michigan, North Carolina

    2018 Nike EYBL Stats:  21.9 PPG, 7.5 RPG, 1.5 APG, 1.6 BPG

Notes:  Brooks has been performing at the highest levels of the EYBL, and is being discussed as an overall MVP.  He has attracted the attention of most of the nation’s premier programs.  He plays with an edge, can score inside and out, and brings great length relative to his height.  He shot 49% overall during the spring.  His 3-point shot can be inconsistent at times, but he still managed to end up at 37%.

    D.J. CARTON (QUAD CITY ELITE)

    Hometown – Bettendorf, Iowa (Bettendorf)
    Position – Point Guard
    Height – 6-foot-3
    Weight – 190
    247 Sports Composite Rating – 4-star
Primary Competition – Ohio State, Michigan, Xavier, Marquette, Iowa

    2018 NY2LA Stats Unavailable.

Notes:  Despite not playing on the higher profile circuits, Carton has garnered plenty of attention this spring.  He is a scoring point guard with excellent athleticism.  Carton recently narrowed his list of schools to six and will likely decide in the late summer / early fall.

    KIRA LEWIS (GEORGIA STARS)

Hometown – Hazel Green, Alabama (Hazel Green)
    Position – Combo Guard
    Height – 6-foot-3
    Weight – 180
    247 Sports Composite Rating – 4-star
Primary Competition – Alabama, Auburn, Baylor, Clemson, Kentucky

    2018 Nike EYBL Stats:  21.0 PPG, 2.7 RPG, 3.5 APG, 2.3 SPG.

Notes:  Lewis has really illustrated why AAU basketball can be so important.  He has elevated has stature from relative unknown on a national level to a 5-star recruit that everyone is watching.  His quickness is off the charts, he is an aggressive defender and he can score in a variety of ways.  He shot 47% overall and 37% from distance.

    JAHMIUS RAMSEY (DRIVE NATION)

Hometown – Arlington, Texas (IMG Academy, Florida)
    Position – Combo Guard
    Height – 6-foot-4
    Weight – 185
    247 Sports Composite Rating – 4-star
Primary Competition – Arkansas, Baylor, Louisville, Texas A&M, Virginia Tech.

    2018 Nike EYBL Stats:  14.7 PPG, 3.5 RPG, 3.3 APG, 1.2 SPG

Notes:  Ramsey is a big guard that uses his size and strength to his advantage against smaller opponents.  He could be a real presence defending the perimeter.  He struggled some with his shot and assists to turnovers during the spring.  He shot just 27% from 3-point range.

    MATTHEW HURT (D1 MINNESOTA)

Hometown – Rochester, Minnesota (John Marshall)
    Position – Forward
    Height – 6-foot-9
    Weight – 200
    247 Sports Composite Rating – 5-star
Primary Competition – Duke, Kansas, Kentucky, North Carolina

2018 Adidas Gauntlet Stats:  16.2 PPG, 6.4 RPG, 1.7 APG

Notes:  Hurt is an efficient scorer, shooting at 59% on the spring including 42% from distance.  He doesn’t have to do it all on a deep and talented team, but he can be dominant when he wants to take over.

    TYRELL TERRY (D1 MINNESOTA)

    Hometown – Minneapolis, Minnesota (DeLaSalle)
    Position – Point Guard
    Height – 6-foot-3
    Weight – 170
    247 Sports Composite Rating – 4-star
Primary Competition – Minnesota, Iowa, Butler, Wisconsin, Stanford

2018 Adidas Gauntlet Stats:  12.3 PPG, 4.2 RPG, 5.8 APG

Notes:  Terry is probably the purest point guard in the group.  He looks to pass and facilitate as much as he looks to score.  He can score very efficiently when he looks for his shot.  He was 53% overall and 45% from distance this spring.  He missed the most recent action with an injury.

    ISAIAH STEWART (CITY ROCKS)

Hometown – Rochester, New York (La Lumiere Prep, Indiana)
    Position – Center/Power Forward
    Height – 6-foot-9
    Weight – 245
    247 Sports Composite Rating – 5-star
Primary Competition – Duke, Kentucky, Michigan State, Texas, Louisville

    2018 Nike EYBL Stats:  17.6 PPG, 10.6 RPG, 1.3 APG, 1.4 BPG.

Notes:  Stewart has an NBA ready body and he uses it to be a dominant rebounder and post-scorer.  He finished second on the circuit in rebound per game.

    JALEN LECQUE (NY RENAISSANCE)

Hometown – Bronx, New York, (Christ School, North Carolina)
    Position – Combo Guard
    Height – 6-foot-3
    Weight – 180
    247 Sports Composite Rating – 5-star
Primary Competition – North Carolina, Kentucky, Oregon, NC State, Tennessee

2018 Nike EYBL Stats:  14.2 PPG, 4.6 RPG, 3.8 APG

Notes:  Lecque is still evaluating whether to reclassify into the class of 2018.  He is an explosive guard that can get to and finish at the rim.  He struggled from the field this spring, shooting 43% overall and just 11% from 3-point distance.

    BRANDON NEWMAN

    (Kyle Telechan/Post-Tribune)

    Hometown – Valparaiso, Indiana (Valparaiso)
    Position – Shooting Guard
    Height – 6-foot-4
    Weight – 190
    247 Sports Composite Rating – 3-star
Primary Competition – Purdue, Xavier, Creighton, Nebraska

    2018 Nike EYBL Stats:  18.3 PPG, 5.1 RPG, 1.1 APG, 1.3 SPG

Notes:  Newman is an elite 3-point shooter.  He was good for 40% from behind the arc on 134 attempts.  He also rebounds well from his guard position and is an emerging defender.  Expect a flurry of higher level offers here.

    (Indiana has not offered Newman)
