Pro Hoosiers: IU all-time assist leader Yogi Ferrell agrees to deal with Utah Jazz according to report

    Utah is becoming Indiana West.

The Athletic’s Shams Charania reported early Friday morning that the Utah Jazz have agreed to a deal with guard Yogi Ferrell.

“Free agent guard Yogi Ferrell has agreed to a deal with the Utah Jazz, sources tell the Athletic,” Charania wrote on Twitter.

Ferrell will join former IU forward Juwan Morgan in Salt Lake City.  Morgan signed there as an undrafted free agent in 2019 and ended up starting two playoff games during his rookie season.

Meanwhile, Ferrell played in 50 games for the Sacramento Kings in 2019-20, averaging 4.4 points, 1.4 assists and 1 rebound in 10.6 minutes per game.  His minutes this past season were the fewest Ferrell played on a per game basis throughout his career.

Ferrell has been in the NBA for four seasons. In his most productive season in the league, his second in 2017-18, Ferrell played all 82 games for the Dallas Mavericks and averaged 10.2 points, 2.5 assists and 3 rebounds in 27.8 minutes per game.

The 6-foot Ferrell won a pair of Big Ten titles at IU in connection with his freshman and senior seasons.  Ferrell is Indiana’s all-time assist leader and first in three-pointers made in Big Ten games. Ferrell played in more games (137) at IU than anyone else.

Ferrell will not get a chance to see any tune-up game action with the Jazz.  Utah has already completed its preseason.  The NBA regular season starts next week.  Ferrell had been considered one of the top available free agent guards on the market throughout the preseason.

Morgan and Ferrell were teammates at IU for the 2015-16 season when the Hoosiers won their last Big Ten title.

Indianapolis products Mike Conley and Trevon Bluiett are also with the Jazz.

Terms of Ferrell’s new deal have not been released.  He is coming off of a two-year $6.15 million deal with the Kings.
