Three quick reasons why Indiana beat/lost to Florida State
1. Lenée’s day: Lenée Beaumont had a tough night against Marshall, with a team-high seven turnovers. She scored 10 points, for the second time in the first three games this year, along with six assists and four turnovers, but the redshirt sophomore appeared out of sorts throughout that night with all the turnovers. But Beaumont bounced back in a big way against FSU, with a career-high 23 points on 8-for-12 shooting, including a perfect 3 for 3 from 3-point range. The Lisle, Ill. native added five rebounds and one assist with two turnovers. She was much better for the Hoosiers on Sunday.
2. Taking care of the ball: Indiana committed a staggering 28 turnovers against Marshall on Tuesday. But the Hoosiers played much cleaner in that department on Sunday. They gave away 13 turnovers on the night — five in the first half, eight in the second. Zania Socka-Nguemen and Shay Ciezki finished with five each, accounting for most of the damage. But, particularly for Ciezki, Indiana needed her to play aggressively, so head coach Teri Moren can live with some of those turnovers. IU would not have won this game if it gave the ball away the way it did on Tuesday.
3. Overcoming foul trouble: Freshman Nevaeh Caffey picked up a fourth foul late in the third quarter, and checked out until the very end of the game, with less than two minutes remaining. But several other Hoosiers also had foul trouble at that point — Beaumont, Ciezki, and Edessa Noyan all had three fouls at the end of the third quarter. Ciezki and Noyan both fouled out, as did Phoenix Stotijn, who committed three fouls in the fourth quarter. But Indiana overcame those issues, thanks to Beaumont’s performance, Ciezki thriving with 22 points before fouling out with 1:49 remaining, and small but important bench contributions from players like Jerni Kiaku, who hit a clutch basket with 15 seconds remaining to put IU ahead by four points.
