Three quick reasons why Indiana beat Butler
1. A big first quarter: Indiana raced out to a big lead early in the game. Teri Moren’s team dominated the opening period and built up a 23-7 lead by the end, with freshman Maya Makalusky capping it off with a 3-pointer at the buzzer. The Hoosiers held Butler to 16.7 percent from the field in the first quarter, while they shot 61.5 percent, themselves.
2. Beaumont keeps balling: After a tough game against Marshall, Lenée Beaumont responded with a career night against Florida State. She followed that with another strong outing on Wednesday. The redshirt sophomore put up 19 points in the first half, including four 3-pointers. Beaumont finished shooting 6 for 9 from the field and 4 for 5 from beyond the arc for 21 points, with five rebounds, two assists with three turnovers. The Lisle, Ill. native has played with so much confidence the last two games, something IU will need from her on a regular basis this year.
3. Navigating foul trouble, again: IU dealt with significant foul trouble on Sunday in Tallahassee, with three players fouling out and several others with three or four fouls late in the game. The Hoosiers didn’t have anyone foul out on Wednesday, but they came close. Zania Socka-Nguemen, Valentyna Kadlecova, and Makaluksy all finished with four. Those three players, along with Shay Ciezki and Phoenix Stotijn, all had two fouls at halftime. Indiana was able to overcome the issue with timely substitutions and controlled play when needed, but this trend will continually test the team’s depth if it continues.

Quotable
Lenée Beaumont on her confidence level: “I definitely feel more confident the more we play. I think I kind of had a slow start to the year, but honestly, looking back on it, I think I just needed to get my legs under me, be more comfortable. I know I wasn’t very confident out there. I would just say, give credit to the staff and my teammates because they pour confidence in me every single day. I gotta continue to grow in that department, though, for sure.”
Shay Ciezki on Beaumont: “She’s a great player. We always talk about, you see one shot go through, and it’s like, ‘Alright, I can breathe a little bit.’ She’s been hitting a ton of those, so it’s nice to sit back and watch sometimes.”
Teri Moren on foul trouble issues: “We know it’s a problem. … It’s hard, because I want them to stay aggressive defensively. But we have to have that controlled aggression, we have to play more disciplined. We gotta be sound. We just have to do a better job, and we’ll keep emphasizing it, we’ll keep talking about it, we’ll keep showing them. Our goal is to never let those guys get on the free-throw line. We’ve done it way too much. So for sure, it’s a point of emphasis for us, and they’ve heard it. And I just think it’s trying to find that balance, because I do want them to stay aggressive, but I need them to play much more sound and less fouling, for sure.”
