IU soccer defeats Wake Forest, advances to NCAA third round

Indiana is following a familiar November script.

The Hoosiers defeated No. 10 seed Wake Forest 3-2 in two overtimes Sunday evening to advance to the round of 16 in the 2023 NCAA Tournament.

IU fell behind twice, but twice had an answer for Demon Deacon goals.

But there would be no Wake Forest equalizer after an Indiana goal in the first overtime.

Wake Forest took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but a header by Indiana’s Hugo Bacharach in the 54th minute tied the match at one.

After a Demon Deacon goal via a penalty kick, Karsen Henderlong put a 73rd minute deflection into the back of the net to level the match once again.

In overtime, it was 6-foot-4 Bacharach once again, this time off his heel on a set piece just over three minutes into the first extra session.

Indiana has advanced to the Sweet 16 for a ninth straight season, the longest active run in the NCAA.

The Hoosiers will next travel to No. 7 seed Virginia.
