For the first time since the first round of the College Football Playoff last December, IU football is taking the show on the road.
No. 11/12 Indiana travels to Iowa this Saturday for a 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff at Kinnick Stadium (Peacock). The Hawkeyes are coming off an extra day of rest following their 38-28 road win at Rutgers on Friday night.
The game is Iowa’s homecoming weekend. The Hoosiers have lost four straight in Iowa City, with their last win coming in 2007. Since that 38-20 win, the Hawkeyes have won eight of nine in the series.
Iowa is led by head coach Kirk Ferentz, who at 70-years-old became the Big Ten’s all-time wins leader earlier this season.
Iowa (3-1) is averaging 33.5 points per game, good for 54th in the nation, and they are giving up 14.5 a contest, good for No. 24. PFF grades Iowa as having the No. 10 offense and No. 26 defense in the country. Their wins have come at Rutgers (38-28), vs. UMass (47-7), and vs. Albany (34-7). Their loss came on the road against Iowa State, 16-13.
Ferentz is 219-146 all-time as a head coach, including 207-125 during an Iowa tenure that started in 1999.
6-foot-2 and 235-pound Iowa quarterback Mark Gronowski transferred in from South Dakota State during the offseason. He has started at Iowa completing 49 of 81 (60.5%) of his throws for 492 yards, with three touchdowns and an interception. Gronowski has been sacked eight times already, and he’s running the ball much more than he had previously in his career. He has 46 carries for 143 yards.
So what’s the outlook for this Saturday in Iowa City? Everything is pointing to the Hoosiers.
The gambling forecast opened with Indiana as a 2.5-point favorite, and as of Monday morning most sports books are calling IU around a 7.5-point favorite.
ESPN’s FPI model gives IU a 78.4% chance to win at Kinnick. The Hoosiers are No. 6 in FPI while Iowa is No. 31 after moving up nine spots following their road win at Rutgers on Friday. ESPN’s SP+ model projects a 30-21 No. 6 IU win over No. 35 Iowa, and gives them a 72% probability to pull it out.
The early weather forecast for Saturday is calling for a high temperature of 84. It looks like a sunny day with no rain and light wind. Obviously you’ll want to check back on that later in the week.
We will of course have much more on this game in the days to come.
