Three quick reasons why Indiana beat Michigan
1. Defense bends but doesn’t break: Michigan’s offense has struggled this year, and Indiana made sure that continued on Saturday. The Wolverines applied some pressure, though, with three red zone visits in the second half — one after Josh Hoover threw his first interception of the season. But the Hoosiers held up, keeping UM out of the end zone every time. IU held the Wolverines to 224 total yards. The Hoosiers racked up 10 tackles for loss and three sacks, including two by Tobi Osunsami.
2. Key takeaways: A big difference in the game wound up being two huge turnovers in the first half. Isaiah Jones recovered a fumble in the first quarter, and Amare Ferrell picked off a Tommy Carr pass off a tip by A.J. Harris; both set up Nico Radicic field goals. With points at a premium all day, those takeaways proved massive for the Hoosiers.
3. Overcoming a bad offensive game: Indiana’s offense simply did not do enough to win this game on its own. Hoover had his worst outing of the season, completing 8 of 18 pass attempts for 81 yards with the interception. IU finished with only 212 yards of offense, its second-lowest output of the Curt Cignetti era. Michigan has a stout defense, as it entered Saturday ranked No. 4 in the country in total defense. The Hoosiers didn’t get into the end zone until overtime, when Hoover ran it in himself.
