As it relates to Indiana football assembling a very strong recruiting class of 2027, it seems like a matter of when, not if.
It’s still early May, and most high school commitments don’t come until the calendar officially says it’s summer. Right now the Hoosiers have just four verbal commitments. But that will be changing over the next two months.
Who will join that group? Following a run of impressive April visitors, clues are starting to roll in.
One player generating a lot of buzz across multiple national reports over the last week is North Carolina-based linebacker Jalaythan Mayfield, with multiple outlets calling IU the early leader.
Mayfield would be a major addition for the Hoosiers. He’s a 4-star, the No. 228 overall player in the 2027 class, and the No. 21 linebacker in the nation.
Indiana was Mayfield’s first visit. While IU is currently being reported as a leader by some national outlets, he’s still got visits scheduled to Miami (Fla.), Oregon, Georgia and Kentucky before a planned July announcement.
There are national predictions IU will land Massachusetts-based safety Brady Scott. He visited last month. The 6-foot and 195-pound Scott is a 3-star and the No. 55 safety in the 2027 class. Iowa appears to be the main school Indiana needs to hold off.
Rivals national reporter Allen Trieu says IU is trending favorably for Ohio-based edge rusher Reinaldo Perez.
The 6-foot-5 and 240-pound Perez is a 4-star, the No. 314 overall player in the class, and the No. 32 defensive lineman. He lives in Columbus, Ohio and has an Ohio State offer. The Buckeyes appear to be the biggest threat.
Last week we shared 2027 in-state 5-star receiver Monshun Sales is trending favorably with Indiana, and those reports continue to roll in.
247Sports Tom Noy says IU and Texas are the current most likely schools to land Sales, continuing the trend away from Alabama.
“This one is trending away from the Crimson Tide,” Noy said. “Indiana is in a very good spot. Texas moved the needle during a recent visit. Right now, if he picked a school, I’m very confident he will be playing for the national champion Hoosiers or the Texas Longhorns.”
Sales is expected to announce his commitment in July.
Speaking of 5-stars, Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong says IU made strong impressions on Jalen Brewster and Landen Williams-Callis during their official visits. Indiana has solidified themselves as contenders for both, he says.
Wiltfong also said IU has momentum with 6-foot, 195-pound 4-star safety Kenaz Sullivan (No. 236 overall, No. 21 safety), and they continue to be among the top schools for 6-foot-3, 215-pound 4-star in-state tight end Mason Oglesby (No. 348 overall, No. 19 tight end).
