FINAL: Michigan State 81 – Indiana 60
SECOND HALF
MSU in control, leading 79-55 with 3:06 to go.
- Indiana just looks all out of sorts. Reed Bailey and Conor Enright have both fouled out. Bailey’s was pretty avoidable. IU had gotten a steal, but Bailey two-handed shoved Carson Cooper while the Hoosiers were in transition. It ended up being upgraded to a flagrant one.
- Along with that, Michigan State is now on a 26-2 run over the past eight minutes, and Indiana has no answer for anything on offense. Not much to be proud of in the second half.
Same score as we head into the penultimate media timeout. 65-53, 7:34 left to play.
- Enright and Bailey both have four fouls, but foul trouble has been the least of IU’s worries. Momentum has gone completely in favor of the Spartans, due to MSU shooting 61 percent from the field in the half. What looked like the better part of their game in the first half has been dominated in the second.
- Indiana is also looking for a second contributor on the offensive end. Wilkerson has 19, but everyone else is still in single figures. DeVries has the next most with seven on 2-of-8 from the field.
This ones getting away from IU. MSU leads 65-53 with 8:35 to go.
- Michigan State is on a 12-0 run, and the Hoosiers have had three turnovers in three minutes. The Spartans have had 26 points off of Indiana turnovers.
Spartans up 53-51 with 11:38 to play.
- Hoosiers keeping it close, and Lamar Wilkerson is the one to thank for that. He’s up to 17 points, with nine of those coming in this half alone. The team is also holding its own defensively pretty well. MSU has yet to make one from beyond the arc in this half.
- Jeremy Fears has also yet to score in this half. Conor Enright has been the main assignment on him, which has made the difference. IU has to play without fouling, though. They have five as a team in the half, and Bailey, DeVries, and Enright all have three.
MSU leads 49-46 with 15:51 to play.
- Good response out of halftime for Indiana. They’re hanging with the Spartans offensively and have forced a few mistakes on the defensive end. Lamar Wilkerson also has two made 3s, and Enright added one of his own.
- Jaxon Kohler has six early points in the half, making his game total 14 so far. Kur Teng is also in double figures with 11, and Fears still has 19. MSU only has five points outside of those players.
HALFTIME: Michigan State 39 – Indiana 32
FIRST HALF
Michigan State leads 29-25 with 3:55 in the half.
- Indiana still isn’t getting the looks they want on offense, but driving to the basket and drawing defenders has at least gotten them to the free-throw line. If they can continue to get downhill and get Wilkerson and Devries going into halftime, that could help their chances.
- Jeremy Fears is up to 17 points so far, but Conor Enright being on the bench for a good percentage of the half is significant. We’ve seen some impressive performances with him matched up on guards, and Indiana could use someone to slow Fears down.
Hoosiers up 20-15 with 7:51 to go in the half.
- It’s a mix of good defense from Indiana and some mistakes from MSU. The Spartans have five turnovers so far and are shooting 33% from the field. IU has gotten some good contests, but Michigan State has also missed some wide-open looks.
- No clear hand to feed yet from IU’s standpoint. Sam Alexis leads the team with four points so far, and all but Trent Sisley have been able to tack on points. On the other side, Jeremy Fears Jr. is the early leader with 12, and Jaxon Kohler has three.
Indiana up 14-10 with 11:42 left.
- IU has played some solid defense on the Spartans so far. They’ve forced a lot of outside looks for Michigan State, which hasn’t been a strong suit for them this season. MSU is 3-of-8 from the field so far.
- Tucker DeVries has had his fair share of struggles recently, and that trend has continued into tonight so far. He hit his first attempt from the field for a three, but has gone 1 for 4 since and missed everything on his last shot. The MSU student section has let him hear it through the media timeout.
Hoosiers lead 6-4 with 15:26 left in the half.
- Not a lot of offense to start this game. MSU has gotten some good looks but hasn’t capitalized on a few of them. Meanwhile, Indiana’s having some trouble with their sets and has gone deep into the shot clock a few times. Teams are a combined 3-of-9 early.
- Even though Carson Cooper is listed as one inch taller than Alexis, there’s a clear size advantage there, both in weight and height. However, when Cooper is on the bench, it looks evenly matched.
PREGAME NOTES
- Same starters for Indiana: Enright, Conerway, Wilkerson, DeVries, Alexis
- Josh Harris and Jason Drake are still listed as OUT. Michigan State is fully healthy apart from Kaleb Glenn, who is out for the season.
- Indiana will have their hands full on offense with Michigan State. The Spartans allow a lot of threes, but teams aren’t making them at a high clip. The Hoosiers will have to shoot well to stay in it.
