    FINAL: Indiana 86 – Kansas State 69

    Image

    SECOND HALF

IU leading 78-63 with 3:59 left to play.

    • Indiana is firmly in the driver’s seat to take this one down at home. Overall, a really impressive defensive night from the Hoosiers and plenty of offense to complement it. IU has done well at the free-throw line as well, making 22 of their 29 attempts.
    • If you want to play the hypothetical game, I think IU could easily have a much bigger lead if more shots fell from outside. Up to this point, they’re 8-of-30 from beyond the arc.

Indiana leads 72-59 with 7:10 left.

    • Kansas State made a run back, but the energy in Assembly Hall has allowed the Hoosiers to roll with the punches. IU is five of their last seven from the field. PJ Haggerty is starting to get hot though; he’s up to 16.
    • Reed Bailey has surged to a very impressive second half. He is Indiana’s leading scorer with 21, largeley due to his 13-15 clip from the free throw line.

Hoosiers up 61-44 with 11:33 left to play.

    • Indiana is off to a much more efficient half offensively in the second half. They’re 9-of-12 from the field and have made their last three attempts.
    • The turnover margin is also a notable stat line between the two sides. Indiana has forced 16 Wildcat turnovers and has only given up 10. Off of those, IU has scored 22 points, and KSU has 11.

IU up 49-29 with 16:45 to go.

    • Another quick start out of the break from Indiana. They’re off on an 8-0 run in the last two minutes. Reed Bailey and Tayton Conerway are at the center of it. It’s rocking in Assembly Hall.
    • Conor Enright has played some amazing defense on PJ Haggerty. He hasn’t given up an easy look yet for the nation’s leading scorer.

    Halftime: Indiana 39 – Kansas State 27

    Image

    FIRST HALF

Indiana leads 28-24 with 3:47 left.

    • I think IU fans are seeing some of the drawbacks of relying so heavily on three-point shots. There’s just no sustainability with it. Luckily, the Hoosiers have played some really good defense to complement some struggles.
    • It definitely hasn’t been the shootout some of us may have expected. PJ Haggerty sits at six points and five turnovers, and the Wildcats are 8-of-21 from the field. Indiana is 11-28 from the field overall.

IU leads 22-16 with 7:52 left in the first.

    • Kansas State has made a good run of its own, and that’s without PJ Haggerty being a factor. Indiana hasn’t made a field goal in the last five minutes. KSU is doing a good job of being physical on the perimeter defensively, which has limited IU’s opportunities.
    • The Hoosiers have a clear lack of presence on the low block offensively. Because the Wildcats are playing so high, IU has a clear opportunity to try and feed the inside, but neither Bailey nor Alexis has shown an ability to get a bucket of their own.

Hoosiers up 20-4 with 11:33 in the half.

    • IU is on an 11-0 run since the last timeout. Their defense has been really impressive. Kansas State is already up to seven turnovers, and Indiana just has one.
    • Tayton Conerway is 2-of-3 early from beyond the arc in this one. He’s up to eight quick points. He won’t shoot it a ton, but he’s been very efficient in the season so far.

Indiana starts with a 12-4 lead with 15:11 left in the half.

    • Hoosiers come out firing from beyond the arc. They’re already 10 shots deep from outside, with three makes. Some of them have been decent looks, some seemed maybe too far outside. Nevertheless, it’s working so far.
    • Interestingly enough, Conor Enright is picking up PJ Haggerty full-court for the Hoosiers. Kansas State is definitely emphasizing a fast pace on offense, so Enright matching up to Haggerty makes sense due to his quickness.

    PREGAME NOTES

    • The betting line has continued to move in Indiana’s favor. IU is around a 10.5-point favorite on multiple sites. Personally, I thought if anything, it would’ve moved down.
    • The big name to watch for Kansas State is PJ Haggerty. He’s first in PPG in the nation while averaging 28. Look for a heavy workload from him.
    • No difference in starters for IU: Enright, Conerway, Wilkerson, DeVries, Bailey
    • There’s a pretty good energy in the crowd, even with students not here.
