2023 Indiana Mr. Basketball Markus Burton is headed to the transfer portal.
The 6-foot and 190-pound Notre Dame guard sustained a left ankle injury early in the 2025-26 season, underwent surgery on Dec. 10, and sat out the remainder of the season. He was averaging 19.9 ppg heading into the TCU contest.
Burton played in just 10 games and could be eligible for a medical waiver, which would give him two years or remaining eligibility.
Coming into the 2025-26 season, Burton was Preseason First Team All-ACC, and on the Naismith Trophy, Bob Cousy Award, and Wooden Award Watch Lists.
For his three-year college career, Burton has played in 69 games with 68 starts. He has averaged 19.1 points while shooting 43.8% overall including 33.2% from three. Burton has made 84.7% of his free throws. He has added 3.8 assists and 3.4 rebounds.
As a sophomore in 2024-25, Burton averaged 23.5 ppg in league play which led all ACC players.. His 21.3 season average ranked 5th nationally. He shot 37.5% from three on 128 attempts.
His 17.5 ppg as a freshman in 2023-24 led all ACC freshmen and ranked 3rd nationally amongst DI freshmen.
As a high school senior (Penn H.S., Mishawaka, Ind.) Burton averaged a state-best 30.3 points per game, along with 5.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists and 3.6 steals, while shooting 58.2 percent from the floor and 42.5 percent from deep. He led Penn to a 28-2 record and Semi-State Runner-Up finish in the 2022-23 season.
