IU basketball transfer portal names to know — Marshall center Micah Handlogten

Indiana’s search for size in the paint continues, and one player they are involved with is former Marshall center Micah Handlogten.

The 7-foot-1-inch, 227-pound Sun Belt Freshman of the Year entered the transfer portal after averaging 7.6 points, 9.8 rebounds and 2.3 blocks per game in 2022-23 for the Thundering Herd.

From an advanced analytic perspective, Handlogten put up some eye-catching numbers.  He was No. 10 in the country from 2-point range at 71.1 percent.  His 8.7 percent block rate was No. 27, as was his 26.3 percent defensive rebounding rate.  Handlogten’s offensive rebounding rate of 13.7 percent was No. 41.  On a per-40 minute basis, he averaged 15.6 rebounds and 3.7 blocks.

Free throw shooting has been a challenge so far.  He made just 52.9 percent in his first season on 68 attempts.  Handlogten has a decent looking stroke from long range but made just 1-of-12 from three.  Fouls were a bit of a problem as he posted 5.5 per-40 minutes.

A starter in 26 of Marshall’s 32 games, Handlogten saw his minutes generally increase as the season progressed.  Also a former all-state lacrosse player in high school, he seems to be a player who will improve steadily in the coming years.

Handlogten already has a visit set to Florida, and N.C. State appears to be a key player as well.

On Tuesday, Cory Smith of 247Sports said Handlogten had a top eight of IU, N.C. State, Florida, Auburn, Georgia, Missouri, Virginia and Arkansas.

Handlogten has an NBA pedigree.  His father Ben played for the Jazz and Nets after a college career at Western Michigan.

As a high school prospect out of Southlake Christian Academy in Huntersville, N.C., Handlogten also had offers from American, Presbyterian, Youngstown State, Jacksonville.  He was a 3-star and ranked No. 299 in the 2022 class according to On3.

Playing for former N.C. State guard Rodney Monroe at Southlake, he averaged 17 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks as a senior.  He was two-time all-state.

Handlogten played for South Carolina based Upward Stars on the Adidas circuit for spring and summer basketball.
