According to multiple reports, Michigan will go with true freshman quarterback Tommy Carr as its starter Saturday against Indiana.
Carr saw the first meaningful action of his college career this past weekend when coach Kyle Whittingham inserted him into the lineup to start the second half against Penn State at Michigan Stadium.
So who is Tommy Carr?
Michigan did not ask the 6-foot-4 and 195-pound Carr to throw the ball a lot against the Nittany Lions. He completed 5-of-7 passes for 47 yards in the air while rushing for 36 yards and a touchdown. He was 5 for 5 on throws of less than 20 yards, and 0 for 2 on deep balls.
Carr also ran four times for 37 yards and a score. He’s a good runner but not elite. Michigan ran multiple designed runs for him, and rolled him out of the pocket on some of his pass attempts. He seems like a respectable candidate to follow the formula that has given IU trouble at times this season: Get the ball out quick, roll out to the perimeter, dump the ball to tight ends and backs, look to run, move the chains and eat the clock.
So for Indiana, that will meaning keeping Carr contained in the pocket, key on designed runs, and be sound in coverage and tackling against the short passing game.
Carr comes from an impressive football lineage. His grandfather Lloyd was the Michigan head coach from 1995-2007, coached the 1997 national championship team, and was 122-40 over 13 seasons. His other grandfather Tom Curtis played safety at Michigan from 1966-69 and was a two-time All-American.
As a member of the high school recruiting class of 2026, Carr was a four-star recruit out of Saline (Michigan) H.S. He was the No. 23 quarterback in the class and the No. 338 overall prospect in the class.
Carr replaces second-year starter Bryce Underwood, who has completed just 58.1% of his passes and has a Big Ten-leading six interceptions.
IU coach Curt Cignetti said this week Whittingham has a history of playing two quarterbacks on the field at the same time, so it’s possible we see Carr and Underwood together.
No. 6 Indiana (6-1) and Michigan (4-2) kick at Noon ET Saturday in Ann Arbor (FOX).
