IU basketball recruiting: Hoosiers offer 2024 Montverde 4-star PG Curtis Givens III

A theme is emerging after the first live recruiting period of 2023.

Indiana is expanding its list of class of 2024 targets and going after the top shooters.

On Monday, 2024 point guard Curtis Givens III announced he’s received an offer from IU, and that was no doubt driven in large part by a highly productive weekend at the Nike EYBL in Emerson, Ga.

Givens averaged 18.8 points, 4.8 assists and 3.0 rebounds in four EYBL games over the weekend playing for the MoKan Elite program.  Givens made 11-of-27 from three (40.7 percent), and he only turned the ball over twice in 101 minutes of action.

According to the On3 Consensus, Givens is a 4-star prospect, the No. 71 overall player in the 2024 class, and the No. 12 point guard.

This is brand new contact by Indiana.  Givens told The Daily Hoosier he spoke with assistant coach Yasir Rosemond on Sunday.  He did not know Rosemond before the weekend, and did not have prior contact with IU.

But Indiana is certainly no stranger to his Montverde Academy high school program.  Indiana is recruiting several players on the current team, including Liam McNeeley, Asa Newell, and Derik Queen, who all took visits to Bloomington over the last seven months.

And of course former Montverde stars Jalen Hood-Schifino and Malik Reneau played for the Hoosiers in 2022-23.  Givens told The Daily Hoosier that Rosemond was telling him on Sunday “all about Jalen’s year at Indiana.”  Givens considers himself a scoring point guard, so the appeal of Hood-Schifino’s season seems obvious.

While it’s relatively late in the cycle for 2024s, Indiana seems like it could catch up fast in this recruitment.  Givens doesn’t appear to be far down a path with anyone to this point.  The lone visit he has taken was an unofficial visit to Tennessee.  Givens told On3 over the weekend that his first official visit will be to LSU.

The 6-foot-3 Givens is a Memphis product and he attended Memphis University School before transferring to Montverde.

Texas also offered Givens over the weekend.  Mississippi State, LSU, Tennessee, Ole Miss, Nebraska, Illinois, Georgetown, Maryland, St. John’s, Memphis and Florida are some of his earlier offers.
