IU basketball recruiting: Class of 2023 names to know — in-state guard Logan Imes

We continue to turn our focus to the class of 2023, and one of the in-state prospects who really surged this summer was Zionsville, Ind. combo guard Logan Imes.

After starting the spring with Adidas affiliated Indiana Elite’s 2023 squad, Imes played up during July against the top competition on the national circuit.

Indiana Elite has been a pipeline of talent for IU in recent years, and the staff has had their eyes on Imes for a while including on Tuesday when they attended an open gym.

Long-time Indiana Elite coach Mark Adams hasn’t had many guys play up a year, but he believed Imes was up to the task.

“He’s a high IQ basketball basketball player who can play a couple different positions offensively, sees everyone on the court, and he can guard just about anyone on the floor,” Adams told The Daily Hoosier.  “He’ll do whatever you ask of him.  He really knows how to play and he plays hard, he’ll go get the rebounds that nobody else will get.”

Just how rare is it for someone to make the leap from 16u to 17u with Indiana Elite?

“I don’t play guys up very often,” Adams said.  “The only two guys I’ve played up from 16u to 17u in 30 years are Yogi Ferrell and Kyle Guy, and Logan Imes now. … It takes a little toughness to play up an age group where you don’t get bullied, and he’s a tough kid.”

After a bit of an acclimation to a new level and teammates, Imes fit in well with the 2022 squad.

“Watching him from the first game with the 17s to the last, he was making things happen, he had more confidence in what was going on, and he played really good the last weekend and a half.”

As a sophomore at Zionsville High School, the 6-foot-3 Imes averaged 13.5 points, 4.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per game while shooting 45 percent from the field overall including 32 percent from behind-the-arc.

Adams said Imes made eight three-pointers in a game this summer at the Charlie Hughes Classic, and believes he is a better 3-point shooter than his sophomore season numbers suggest.

“He’s a good 3-point shooter, ” Adams said.  “Consistently proving he is a 40 percent plus 3-point shooter (is what will convince schools who have yet to offer).”

As is the case for many of the players in the Midwest, Dane Fife is the lead IU assistant involved with Imes.  Imes had a conflict for Hoosier Hysteria but is planning to visit Bloomington at some point unofficially this fall.

Imes has offers from Butler and Creighton, with IU, Wisconsin, Penn State and a host of others keeping an eye on him.  He is not currently ranked by the national outlets.

2023 G Logan Imes had no issue stepping up to the 17U level in July, receiving offers from Creighton, Drake, and UMass. He has a mature, skilled game with size & the ability to play both guard spots. Poised, confident, and plays with controlled speed.@ImesLogan @IndianaElite pic.twitter.com/uooa9MZEWq
