    Purdue’s Matt Painter

Matt Painter is in his 19th season as head coach of the Purdue men’s basketball program.

Recruited by Gene Keady prior to his retirement, Painter took over the job as head coach for the 2005-06 season. Since then, Painter has amassed six Sweet 16 appearances, 14 total NCAA tournament berths, four Big Ten regular-season championships, and two Big Ten tournament titles.

Painter has brought in the awards himself, earning four Big Ten Coach of the Year awards (2010, 2017, 2019, 2023) and was named the NABC Coach of the Year in 2019.

Painter was no stranger to coaching before to his prolific career at Purdue. At just one lone season at Southern Illinois, Painter led the team to a 25-5 record with a 17-1 conference record and an NCAA tournament appearance.  Prior to that, Painter had assistant coaching stints at Southern Illinois, Eastern Illinois, Barton, and William & Jefferson.

Similar to Mike Woodson, Painter is at the helm of his alma mater in his playing days. Painter was a four-year guard under Keady and was recruited out of Delta High School in Muncie, Indiana. Painter’s dream scenario was to play under Bob Knight for Indiana, but he never got recruited. At Purdue, Painter appeared in three NCAA tournaments and one NIT tournament.

    LIVING THAT QUAD-1 LIFESTYLE

Purdue enters the Indiana game ranked No. 3 in the NCAA NET rankings, but it’s hard to argue that the Boilermakers don’t have America’s best resume.

Purdue leads the country in quad-1 wins (6; North Carolina, Arizona, Kansas only other teams with at least 5), quad-1 and quad-2 wins (9) and quad 1, 2 and 3 wins (12). All of this while playing the nation’s second-toughest schedule to date (Florida A&M – 1st).

Twelve of Purdue’s 15 wins have come against the KenPom top-150. Purdue has the same number of quad-1 wins as BYU (4 in NET), Alabama (5), Tennessee (6) and Auburn (8) have combined.

TO THE TOP OF THE CHARTS AGAIN

For the third straight season, Purdue has ascended to the top of the national polls, being voted No. 1 in the AP Top 25 three times this year. The Boilermakers become the first Big Ten team to be ranked No. 1 in three straight seasons.

Purdue is one of nine programs to be ranked No. 1 in three straight seasons in AP poll history. Since the turn of the century, only Purdue, Duke, Gonzaga, Kentucky, Villanova and North Carolina have had at least three straight seasons atop the AP Top 25 poll. With the return this year to No. 1, Purdue has now been ranked more
weeks at No. 1 over the last three seasons than any other team.

    CHART CLIMBING WITH PAINTER

Matt Painter is climbing all the charts in Big Ten play, moving up the list in overall wins and Big Ten regular season wins. Painter now needs just one win to tie Illinois legend Lou Henson for fourth place on the Big Ten’s wins list in league games only. Henson is fourth with 214 victories, while Painter has 213.

    PRODUCTION ON BOTH ENDS

Zach Edey is on his way to becoming the seventh player in NCAA history with 2,000 points and 1,000 rebounds and while shooting at least 60 percent from the field. Adding 200 blocks to the list, he would, join Hall of Famers David Robinson and Patrick Ewing as the only players to reach those marks in college basketball history (blocks became a stat in 1986).

    STATSHEET-STUFFER SUPREME

Early on, Braden Smith is one of three players nationally to average at least 12.0 points, 6.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds per game.

    Purdue’s KenPom notable numbers:

    (out of 362 teams)

    Tempo – No. 175 (Offense No. 173 / Defense No. 49)

    Offensive Efficiency – No. 2

    • Purdue has an effective field goal percentage of 56.8 percent on the season (No. 15). The Boilers have improved immensely from three with 39.8 percent (No. 9) and also do very well from two (55.1 percent, No. 30).
    • Purdue has a very high assist rate with a 64.8 percent of an assist on every field goal made (No. 5).
    • The Boilers are also doing well on creating second chances with a 36.6 percent rate on the offensive glass (No. 19).
    • Led by Zach Edey, Purdue gets to the free throw line a lot.  Free throw attempts are 40.4 percent of field goal attempts (No. 26).  Edey attempts 9.9 free throws a game.
    • A relatively weak spot of the offense for Purdue is their turnovers. Opponents are getting steals at a 10.7 percent rate (No. 283) and their overall turnover rate sits at 17 percent (No. 144).

    Defensive Efficiency – No. 22

    • The Boilers are holding teams to a 46.7 effective field goal percentage (No. 52). Opponents are shooting 30.8 percent from three (No. 56) and 47.1 percent from two (No. 73).
    • Purdue does not give up many second chances to opposing teams. Their 24.3 offensive rebound rate ranks in the top 25 in the country (No. 23).
    • The Boilers do not force many turnovers. Their 15.3 percent turnover rate (No. 301) and 7.9 steal percentage (No. 300) rank in the bottom third of the country.  The flip side to this is opponents don’t get to the foul line against Purdue, with free throw attempts making up 23.4 percent of field goal attempts (No. 11).

    Extras

    • Zach Edey is considered the #1 ranked player according to KenPom. His KenPom Player of the Year rating is at 2.212, with second place Kyle Filipowski at 1.640.
    • Edey is No. 1 with fouls drawn per 40 minutes with 9.3.
    • Mason Gillis has a higher offensive rating than Edey, and the 14th best of all players.
    • Purdue has the second-hardest schedule in all of Division 1.
    • Braden Smith is top-30 in both assist rate and three-point percentage.
