Details on Drew Adams’ memorandum of understanding as Indiana basketball assistant coach

Indiana men’s basketball has yet to officially announce Drew Adams as an assistant coach on Darian DeVries’ staff.

But Adams has signed a memorandum of understanding with IU. The Daily Hoosier obtained a copy of that MOU on Monday through a public records request.

Adams’ contract is for two years, but it will automatically extend an additional year on June 30 of each year, unless IU gives him notice of non-renewal. He’ll make $400,000 per year in base salary, more than the initial salaries of any of Mike Woodson’s assistants.

Adams can also receive potential bonuses of one month’s salary (around $33,333.33) for making the NCAA Tournament, a Sweet 16 appearance, a Final Four appearance, and a national championship. Adams also received a $25,000 signing bonus, and $10,000 for moving expenses.

If Adams is fired without cause, IU would owe him $200,000. There is no listed buyout for Adams to the university if he resigned or took another job, though the MOU does include a clause stating “You agree not to seek or apply for other employment while employed by the University without prior written notice to the University.”

Reports initially surfaced on March 31 that Adams would join DeVries in Bloomington. He comes to Indiana after three years at Cincinnati, where he was assistant coach and recruiting coordinator; Adams does not have a recruiting coordinator title with the Hoosiers.

Prior to Cincinnati, he spent seven years as an assistant coach at Bradley, where he helped lead the Braves to their first back-to-back conference championships in program history.

Adams has local ties, as he graduated from Bloomington High School South in 2004 and played three seasons for the Panthers under head coach J.R. Holmes.

IU has officially announced Nick Norton as an assistant coach. Kenny Johnson is reportedly also joining the staff as an assistant coach, but the Hoosiers have yet to confirm that hire.
