IU football coach Curt Cignetti has built a reputation for delivering memorable lines.
“I win, Google me” and “Purdue sucks, but so does Michigan and Ohio State” probably headline the list.
But shortly after the news broke Saturday that Cignetti had signed a new contract with Indiana, he landed a couple more that should get plenty of run.
First, Cignetti talked about why he chose to sign a new deal with Indiana.
“Some people say, ‘Well, why would you do that when this one may open, that one may open, and you’re going to be a hot commodity, and blah blah blah,'” Cignetti said. “And the fact of the matter is, we’re the emerging superpower in college football. Why would I leave?”
Indiana a college football superpower? Pinch yourself.
Cignetti does not like when anyone suggests IU’s game against No. 2 Ohio State is a “big game.” He already corrected Don Fischer on their radio show for such a suggestion. He insists it’s just the next game, and says the preparation for the Buckeyes won’t be different than any other game.
FOX’s Brady Quinn said to Cignetti on Big Noon Kickoff Saturday’s game in Columbus might be the “biggest game in program history.” And he might be right about that.
But Cignetti succinctly explained why the magnitude of the game has no bearing on his preparation.
“If there were a better way to prepare for a big game, we would prepare that way every week,” Cignetti said.
That seems like a quote that will be studied and quoted for years to come.
