Class of 2023 5-star forward K.J. Evans says he will visit Indiana in June

Indiana will have a chance to make it a trifecta with national prep school powerhouse Montverde Academy this summer.

Class of 2023 5-star forward Kwame (K.J.) Evans told Rival’s national analyst Rob Cassidy over the weekend he plans to take an official visit to Bloomington in June.

“Arizona is next up in June. After that, it’s Indiana,” Evans told Cassidy, discussing his visit plans for the group of schools he is considering.

Evans named a top-five earlier in the spring of Oregon, Kentucky, Indiana, Auburn and UCLA, but that list has since expanded to include Arizona, a program Evans is clearly going to take serious given his visit plans.

The 6-foot-9 Evans is currently ranked the No. 3 overall player in the 2023 class according to the 247Sports Composite.  The versatile forward was a teammate last year at Montverde of IU class of 2022 signees Jalen Hood-Schifino and Malik Reneau.

With assistant coach Kenya Hunter leading the way and his former teammates urging him along, Evans told Cassidy he feels wanted at IU.

“I have teammates going there and they want me there,” Evans said.  “The coaches want me there, too. I think it’s cool for me to go out there and check it out. Jalen [Hood-Schifino] and Malik [Reneau] want me to come out there and see it.”

Hood-Schifino and Reneau arrive on campus during the first week of June and will be in Bloomington for Evans’ visit.

Evans is from Baltimore, Md. and attends prep school in Florida.  Oregon was his first and only official visit to this point, and many national commentators have suggested he is leaning in that direction, with Kentucky also a top contender.  One thing seems clear from that set of facts and the addition of Arizona to the mix — geography won’t play a meaningful role.

In a 247Sports’ national article, Evans talked about the factors that are the most important in his recruitment that led him to his top schools.

“Atmosphere, NIL, system, their plan for me and what they want me to do to make it to the league,” Evans told DuShawn London.
