Cignificant bonuses: Curt Cignetti has cashed in on Indiana’s success in 2024

After a wildly successful first season in Bloomington, IU coach Curt Cignetti has already negotiated a new contract which nearly doubles his base pay going forward.

And the new deal, much like the original, is replete with opportunities for Cignetti to earn significant bonus money on top of his massive new salary.

Prior to the announcement of the 2024 College Football Playoff bracket, Cignetti had already earned the following bonuses:

    • $250,000 for reaching bowl eligibility
    • $150,000 for six Big Ten wins
    • $250,000 for a top-six finish in the Big Ten
    • $50,000 for winning Big Ten Coach of the Year
    • $250,000 retention bonus

Although IU finished in a second-place tie with Penn State, the Big Ten tiebreaker rules appear to have been expensive for Cignetti.  Instead of $250,000 for a top-six finish, he could have received a $500,000 bonus for second in the league, or $1 million for winning the conference championship game.

On Sunday Cignetti added his largest bonus yet, $500,000 for Indiana landing a spot in the CFP.

That brings Cignetti’s total bonuses this season to $1.45 million, and and he can continue to earn more cash with each win in the CFP, along with any national coach of the year honors he garners.  At most, Cignetti can earn an incremental $1.5 million for winning the national championship, along with $100,000 if he is named national coach of the year.

This season, according to USA Today numbers, Cignetti trails only Arizona State’s Kenny Dillingham ($2,564,500) in total bonus earnings thus far.
