One might have hoped that an inspired effort against Duke would have been a foundation to build on for Indiana to open the Big Ten.  Unfortunately the Hoosiers were far from inspiring to start the game, and they were never able to overcome it. The Indiana University men’s soccer team defeated Michigan State on penalty kicks (3-2) to advance to the Hoosiers’ NCAA record 19th College Cup.  You can see the official NCAA College Cup bracket here.  Indiana will face the winner of North Carolina and Fordham. Things got off to an ominous start, as the Spartans scored on a header within the first 2 minutes of the match.  The Hoosiers trailed until the 60th minute when Trevor Swartz managed to score directly on a corner kick. The Indiana University men’s basketball team travels to Ann Arbor, Michigan to face the Michigan Wolverines on Saturday.  The tipoff is at 12:30 and the game will be broadcast on CBS.  This is a rare Big Ten game being played in December to accommodate the Big Ten tournament in March, which is being played a week earlier than normal in New York City at Madison Square Garden.  Michigan is 6-2 on the season while Indiana stands at 4-3.  Michigan is currently ranked 44th in the KenPom rankings while Indiana is 80th. The turning point in Indiana’s 91-81 loss to Duke was pretty clear.  For a raucous Indiana crowd spewing venom at Duke’s #3 all game long, this particular turning point was perhaps harder to swallow than if anyone else had delivered the decisive blows.  At the 4:11 mark, after De’Ron Davis free throws, Indiana trailed only 79-78.  The Hoosiers were hanging right with the top-ranked Blue Devils and it felt like something special might be brewing in Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall.  Visions of the 2011 “Wat Shot” surely crept into the minds of many of the Hoosier faithful. While Duke had a clear advantage in overall talent, length and athleticism, Indiana managed to hang right with the number 1 ranked Blue Devils for most of the game.  There was no question that the Hoosiers’ effort was there.  The bottom line here was that that Duke’s length and composure in a tough road environment was enough to pull out the win, 91-81. With number 1 ranked Duke coming to Bloomington on Wednesday, Hoosier fans are hoping for a major upset.  It isn’t unprecedented for Indiana to knock off the top ranked team at Assembly Hall.  In fact, the Hoosiers have done it three times in the 46 year history of IU’s current home court.  As you’d expect with wins of this magnitude, each of these games are likely etched in the memories of Hoosier fans everywhere.
