Jakai Newton will be looking for a fresh start and a clean bill of health back in his home state. On Friday Newton announced on Instagram he’s headed to Georgia State University in Atlanta, about 30 minutes from where he went to high school. Newton was Mike Woodson’s first high school commit, but he was never able to make a meaningful impact during two seasons in Bloomington. Darian DeVries’ lost out on a primary transfer portal target to his former mentor. Iowa transfer guard Josh Dix is headed to Creighton where he’ll play for Greg McDermott.  DeVries was an assistant coach at Creighton under McDermott for several years. Dix visited IU earlier in the week.  DeVries had a prior connection with Dix after recruiting him as a high school prospect. The annual transfer portal extravaganza provides an opportunity for top talent in lower levels of college basketball to take a step up. That appears to be the next move for Division II standout Elyjah Freeman of Lincoln Memorial (Harrogate, Tenn.). Freeman is one of the top-50 prospects at any level in the transfer portal according to the national recruiting outlets. The 6-foot-8 freshman averaged 18.8 points and 9.2 rebounds this season. After three years in Bloomington, Malik Reneau is headed home. The 6-foot-9 forward/center announced Wednesday he’ll play his final season of college basketball back in his hometown of Miami, Fla. for the Miami Hurricanes. There Reneau will play for new Miami head coach Jai Lucas. “I’m coming home,” Reneau wrote on his X account. “It’s all about the U.” Reneau started 19 of the 26 games he played in as a junior for the Hoosiers.  He suffered a midseason knee injury. 2024 Indiana Miss Basketball Chloe Spreen is transferring to IU, she announced on Wednesday. Spreen spent her freshman season at Alabama, where she appeared in 19 games, averaging 6.7 minutes per game.  The combo guard scored 23 points for the season in a limited role. Spreen will arrive at IU with three years of eligibility remaining. As a senior at Bedford North Lawrence Stars in 2023-24, Spreen helped lead the squad to a 20-5 record and its 13th-consecutive IHSAA Class 4A sectional title. DePaul transfer guard Conor Enright will be reunited with Darian DeVries in Bloomington. Enright announced his commitment to Indiana on Wednesday afternoon. Enright and DeVries were together for three seasons at Drake before each went their separate ways ahead of the 2024-25 campaign. The 6-foot-2 Enright played in 23 games for DePaul this season before suffering a season-ending shoulder injury that required surgery in February. Indiana’s 2024 offensive line was never quite the same after Drew Evans went down with a season-ending injury. To be sure, Evans’ early-November setback came ahead of IU’s most difficult stretch of games — Michigan, Ohio State and later Notre Dame — but his presence certainly seemed to be missed. The 6-foot-4 and 306-pound Evans was Indiana’s overall top-rated pass blocker according to PFF before an Achilles injury ended his season. Indiana had four different opportunities to bring Indianapolis native Ryan Conwell to Bloomington. They’re now 0-for-4. The sharpshooting wing is headed to Louisville, ESPN’s Jonathan Givony announced Tuesday evening on X.  He played at South Florida, Indiana State and Xavier prior to this move. Conwell visited IU earlier this week before heading to Louisville.  He was expected at Texas later in the week but instead chose to shut down his portal recruitment. Former West Virginia assistant coach Chester Frazier will not be following Darian DeVries to IU. Frazier was announced as an assistant coach at Virginia Tech on Tuesday morning. Frazier coached under DeVries at WVU for one season. They did not have a prior connection. This move by Frazier could have recruiting implications for IU as DeVries rebuilds the roster. After eight seasons leading the strength and conditioning program for IU basketball, Clif Marshall is moving on. Marshall is expected to be replaced by Ryan Horn, who has been with new IU coach Darian DeVries at both West Virginia and Drake.
