JQ Roberts has already built a reputation for his work ethic, and even a major milestone in his life achieved on Wednesday night didn’t disrupt his focus. Just hours after his first college high major scholarship offer, he was up at the crack of dawn and ready to grind. He returned a message to me at five in the morning. “Yes sir, I had a workout in the morning and then we are on our way to a visit,” Roberts told The Daily Hoosier. That first high major offer for Roberts came from a program he knows well. The Bloomington,…

Right or wrong, connections will be made between the careers of Michigan head coach Juwan Howard and IU’s Mike Woodson. The parallels are obvious, with Howard a former Wolverine player who, like Woodson, returned to lead his alma mater after a lengthy NBA playing and coaching career. Howard was asked on Thursday at the Big Ten’s basketball media day about the adjustment going from the professional ranks to college. “The first thing I learned when I came from NBA to the college level was getting to know everyone in the building, know the names of the managers, getting to know…
Point guard is a priority position for IU basketball in the recruiting class of 2023 and there is clear mutual interest with Gabe Cupps out of Centerville, Ohio. Cupps is 6-foot-1 and currently ranked No. 141 by Rivals. He played up a year on the Adidas circuit with fellow IU recruiting target Reed Sheppard for the Ohio based Midwest Basketball Club. Cupps has taken three unofficial visits to Indiana over the last two months, including one with Sheppard in August, and on Saturday night at Hoosier Hysteria. And he has another visit planned next week. The Daily Hoosier caught up…

Could Indiana have two Bloomington-based players on its 2023-24 roster? That possibility increased on Wednesday when the IU coaching staff visited Bloomington North High School junior forward J.Q. Roberts at his school’s open gym and extended a scholarship offer. Roberts reported the offer on his Twitter page. https://twitter.com/JQ_co2023/status/1445906096871276547?s=20 Roberts averaged 11.6 points and 6.4 rebounds per game for the 2020-21 campaign at North. And those are numbers likely to see a big boost in the upcoming campaign. He surged over the summer for Adidas sponsored Indiana Elite, including 40 and 35 point outbursts in the final weekend against national high-end…
Indiana fans won’t hear the voice of Dan Dakich calling IU basketball games on ESPN anymore, but at least for those based in Indianapolis, they might be hearing much more from the 1980s IU basketball guard in the future. Dakich recently parted ways with ESPN. He’ll no longer be calling college basketball games on television, opting instead to add a two hour weekday show on Outkick 360 to his three-hour Indianapolis-based radio show on 107.5 The Fan. But it wasn’t his radio or television gigs that opened Dakich’s eyes to yet another potential job opportunity. As he tours the city…
It doesn’t seem to matter who you ask, most like Indiana basketball to finish right around the middle of the Big Ten in 2021-22. Already at least four well-known annual preseason predictions put the Hoosiers as the No. 7 team in the league for head coach Mike Woodson’s first season. Each of Athlon Sports, Lindy’s, Blue Ribbon and the Big Ten media have the same four teams at the top of the league in slightly different orders — Michigan, Purdue, Ohio State and Illinois. They all also see Minnesota as the last place team. Change is the new normal in…
There is no way around the fact that the start of the 2021 IU football season has been a disappointment. And the reason why the Hoosiers are 2-3 to start a highly anticipated campaign that Indiana opened ranked No. 17 isn’t real complicated. It isn’t just that IU has played three of the current top-5 teams in the AP Top-25, including two of those three on the road. That alone would obviously be a recipe for a slow start by most. But where things have really gotten sideways is one key stat across those three contests. Indiana committed a total…
In coordination with The Big Ten conference, the IU basketball program has released television designations and tip times for most of Mike Woodson’s first season as head coach. The season will begin at 6:30 p.m. Eastern on November 9 when IU hosts Eastern Michigan. The television slate features just one game on subscription-based BTN Plus although that could change. There are a handful of games for which the tip time is still to be determined including a Big Ten / ACC Challenge contest at Syracuse. IU’s Nov. 27 home game against Marshall is one of the unknown start times. Presumably…
Mike Schumann of The Daily Hoosier joined The Hoosier Report with Matt Denison on Tuesday to share reactions to IU basketball’s 2021 Hoosier Hysteria, and discuss how the program is handling the rollout of name, image and likeness opportunities. The segment starts at the 18:00 mark. The Hoosier Report with Matt Denison features coverage of the Indiana Hoosiers and sports from a Southern Indiana perspective. The show can be heard weekdays at 11 a.m. on 1450 WXVW and 96.1 in Southern Indiana and Louisville, Ky. Looking for more Hoosier sounds?
