IU men’s soccer suffers Sweet 16 overtime loss at Washington

Washington scored a golden goal in the 97th minute to end Indiana’s 2021 season by a final score of 3-2.

The Hoosiers took a 1-0 lead into halftime after Victor Bezerra scored on a penalty kick after he was taken down in the box.

Playing on their home field in Seattle, Washington tied it up in the 48th minute in what became a back and forth affair after the break.

Spencer Glass trailed an attack and dropped in a shot towards the far post to regain the lead, 2-1, but Washington found the equalizer in the 75th minute to force overtime.

“I want to congratulate Washington,” IU head men’s soccer coach Todd Yeagley said. “They’re a good program [that is] well-coached.

“I thought our guys left everything on the field. [There were] maybe a few more plays that we had in us that fell a little short, but I was proud of the effort of our guys.”

Indiana finished the season with a 15-6-1 record.  Their 2021 season concludes after making its 35th consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament and 46th appearance all-time.  They were one of two programs (Wake Forest) to advance to the third round of the tournament in each of the last seven seasons.  The match was moved up to a 3 p.m. Eastern start due to looming weather in the area.
