Indiana is a near consensus pick to win the Big Ten in 2022-23. But it is also a near consensus view that the Hoosiers are not a preseason top-10 team.  While they are the top-ranked team in the Big Ten, IU is No. 13 in the preseason AP top-25, and No. 14 in the coaches poll. Clearly, there’s a story in that dichotomy. The Hoosiers are the popular top pick by-and-large because they return the most scoring and minutes of any team in the league.  They have Trayce Jackson-Davis and Xavier Johnson back, who many believe are the top big…

Indiana has a few bumps and bruises as they get set to face their first exhibition opponent on Saturday. In a media availability on Friday, head coach Mike Woodson named two players specifically who are dealing with what appear to be relatively minor issues.  And the short list includes preseason All-American Trayce Jackson-Davis. “Right now we’re a little banged up,” Woodson said on Friday.  “Trayce is a little banged up.  Tamar Bates has been sidelined for the last couple practices.  “We’ve kind of been going at each other, and it’s been a long run from this summer in terms of…

Indiana will lose Race Thompson and almost certainly Trayce Jackson-Davis after the 2022-23 season, and they are without a frontcourt commitment in the class of 2023. That means whether via the transfer portal or the traditional high school route, adding a big man or two to next year’s team remains a priority. One rising senior the IU staff has seen multiple times this fall is IMG Academy 7-footer Braden Pierce. On Wednesday, head coach Mike Woodson made the trip down to the Florida prep school to evaluate Pierce and his teammates firsthand, he confirmed with The Daily Hoosier. Pierce seems…

In the immediate aftermath of his team’s season-ending NCAA Tournament loss to St. Mary’s in March, IU basketball head coach Mike Woodson was asked how his Hoosiers needed to improve the most during the offseason. After a fifth straight season outside the top-200 in 3-point shooting percentage, and a year spent struggling to guard the likes of versatile wings such as Jaden Ivey, Johnny Davis, Malaki Branham, and others, his answer wasn’t surprising. Shooting and wing defense were jobs 1 and 1A. Since he was brought in to make 3-pointers, and played a key role in Indiana’s wing defense, Woodson’s…

The college basketball coaches poll came out on Tuesday along with ESPN’s Big Ten preview, representing what we hope are the final preseason prognostications we report on this fall. In the first USA TODAY Sports Men’s Basketball Coaches Poll, IU is ranked No. 14 — in the neighborhood where virtually everyone has the Hoosiers going into the 2022-23 campaign. Indiana is also the top team from the Big Ten in the coaches poll, again much like they have been across virtually every major national forecast.  Also in the poll from the Big Ten are No. 22 Michigan and No. 23…

Today is the 82nd birthday of legendary former IU basketball coach Bob Knight. Knight’s last game at Indiana was also the last game for guard Michael Lewis, who finished his career in Bloomington with 545 assists, then a program record. But Lewis arrived as the state’s high school scoring leader in 1996.  The Jasper H.S. product averaged 31.5 points per game as a senior.  He finished his high school career in 13th place on Indiana’s all-time high school scoring list with 2,138 career points. In Lewis’ mind, he arrived at IU later in 1996 as a scorer.  But almost immediately…
