    National recruiting site updates 2024 commit Timothy Carpenter to top-25 QB in class

    IU football class of 2024 quarterback commit Timothy Carpenter is making a strong impression this summer.

    The 6-foot-3 and 215-pound Carpenter moved up to the No. 25 ranked quarterback in the class of 2024 according 247Sports’ national rankings.

    The rising senior signal caller is a 3-star and grades higher than quarterbacks committed to schools like Texas, Texas A&M, Oklahoma, Wisconsin and Miami (Florida).

    On Carpenter’s 247Sports profile page, national analyst Allen Trieu, gave an updated evaluation of the Dayton, Ohio product.

    Trieu says Carpenter projects as an eventual power five starter, and compares him to NFL quarterback Geno Smith.

    “Big and physically ready to compete at the college level,” Trieu wrote in the evaluation.  “Has tested well and shown he has the foot-speed to escape pressure and be a running threat. At the high school level though, he has shown he can stand in the pocket and make throws and then uses his feet when he needs to. Has a calm demeanor, always seems in control of the situation and has come up big in some clutch situations. Has shown he can operate from the gun as well as under center. Seems to make quick reads and does not hang onto to the ball too long. Has good, but not elite velocity. Still needs to polish overall mechanics, but has good upside as well as intangibles.”

    Indiana values a quarterback who can escape the pocket and pose a threat to run, and Carpenter recently clocked a sub-4.60-second 40-yard dash this spring, according to another 247Sports national report.

    Carpenter told The Daily Hoosier he watched Michael Penix, Jr. thrive at IU during a successful run in 2019-20, and he hopes he can do something similar when he arrives in Bloomington next year.

    Indiana was Carpenter’s first Power Five offer, and he committed to IU in May soon after.

    “Hoosier Nation is getting a quarterback that’s going to lead, a quarterback that’s going to win games, and just getting something special,” Carpenter told The Daily Hoosier.
