When Xavier Johnson was ejected at Rutgers on Jan. 9, the officiating crew reversed their call on the floor after a video review. Initially that crew had called a foul on Rutgers’ Antwone Woolfolk for pushing Johnson to the floor, but upon review realized Woolfolk was retaliating for something Johnson had done. The result was a flagrant 2 and an ejection of Johnson, and no foul at all on Woolfolk. All things considered, it seemed like the officials punished the right player that night. Perhaps Woolfolk should have received some form of lesser foul, just to reinforce that his action,…

Will Indiana have their starting center when they travel to No. 10 Illinois Saturday? We may not have that answer until the teams take the floor for pregame warmups in Champaign. IU coach Mike Woodson addressed the health of Kel’el Ware on Monday evening. “I hope he’ll be back Saturday. But I can’t promise that,” Woodson told Don Fischer on their radio show. Woodson added Ware has not yet practiced since he missed the Wisconsin game Friday evening. Ware sprained his right ankle after landing on a teammate’s foot during a practice before the Wisconsin game. In his first season…
For the second time in ten days, legendary IU basketball radio voice Don Fischer had to inform the audience an Indiana player had been ejected from the game for a flagrant 2 foul. Sophomore guard C.J. Gunn was involved in a minor altercation on Friday evening in Madison during which he used his arm to push away a Wisconsin player. After witnessing Gunn’s action, the emotion of the moment influenced Fischer’s choice of words. “I am embarrassed for this ball club,” Fischer said in the immediate aftermath of the incident that led to Gunn’s ejection from the game. Fans, and…
Despite a 7-1 start to the season including 2-0 in the Big Ten, Indiana finds itself going nowhere fast. Mike Woodson’s Hoosiers have lost six of their last eleven games, including four of their last six in league play. At this moment, ranked No. 101 in the NCAA’s NET rankings, Indiana is not even sniffing the NCAA Tournament. While things seem a bit more dire in 2024, it’s a predicament IU was in around this time in Woodson’s two prior campaigns in Bloomington. Rewinding back to 2022, Indiana went on the road on Jan. 29 and defeated Maryland 68-55 to…

There probably wasn’t anything Indiana could have done to keep Tamar Bates from transferring closer to home. But there’s no doubt this version of Bates is exactly what the 2023-24 Hoosiers are missing. The Missouri junior guard poured in a team-high 36 points in a loss to Florida on Saturday. He scored the 36 points on 13-of-21 shooting, including a perfect 9-for-9 from the charity stripe. Bates is averaging 20.8 points per game over his last six contests. Known for struggling in true road games during his time at Indiana, he’s scored 19 at Alabama and 18 at Kentucky during…
Get out the lifejackets and board the lifeboats — Indiana’s season is starting to take on water. As they’re known to do, the Badgers methodically pulled away in the first half, taking a six, then 10, then 13-point lead after a series of mini-runs. The Hoosiers got off to a good start in the second half, and pulled to within 49-42 with 14:58 left in the game. But Wisconsin responded with an 18-2 run that put things out of reach. Let’s take a deeper look at how IU lost 91-79 with another edition of The Report Card. Indiana (12-7, 4-4)…

Indiana starting center Kel’el Ware is out vs. Wisconsin. The 7-foot Ware emerged from the Indiana bus at the Kohl Center wearing a walking boot, according to Seth Tow of The Daily Hoosier, who is in Madison. Ware was not out with the rest of the team during the first round of pregame warmups. He finally emerged from the locker room still wearing the boot. Ware has a sprained right ankle according to coach Mike Woodson. Ware was listed as questionable by Indiana on the team’s pregame availability report. He did not suffer an obvious injury during IU’s most recent…
Indiana’s 2019 season was an outlier for sure. The Hoosiers attained an eight-win season and a winning record in the Big Ten — both for the first time since 1993, and a national ranking for the first time since 1994. During the offseason following that memorable 2019 campaign, IU strength coach David Ballou and athletic performance coach Matt Rhea left Bloomington for Tuscaloosa to join Nick Saban’s Alabama staff. By the end of the 2019 campaign, Ballou and Rhea had built national reputations as two of the best at what they were doing. Losing Ballou, an IU alumnus, stung a…
