Yasir Rosemond grew up in Atlanta, Ga., played junior college basketball in Florida and Kansas and then finished his college career in Oregon. As a college coach, he’s never worked anywhere near the Midwest or for any team in the Big Ten. But such was the draw of Indiana basketball — still, 34 years since its last national championship and 19 years since its last Final Four — that Rosemond was emotionally overwhelmed earlier this month when he was offered an opportunity to be an assistant coach at Indiana. “I sat in my car and cried for 10 minutes when…

Much of the anticipation for Indiana’s 2021 football season stems from the fact that so many Hoosiers decided to use the extra eligibility granted to them because of the COVID-19 pandemic and stick around in Bloomington instead of entering the 2021 NFL Draft. Much of Indiana’s senior class effectively decided not to graduate (from football anyway) because of the option to return for a season that has a chance to be special. However, this weekend also has a chance to be special for the seven Indiana players who did decide to put their hat in the ring. It’s unlikely that…

Indiana added some depth to its defensive line room Wednesday by picking up graduate transfer Weston Kramer, a 6-foot-1, 290-pound defensive tackle from Northern Illinois. Kramer announced his commitment on his Twitter account. In four years at Northern Illinois, Kramer recorded 97 tackles including 12.5 for loss and 3.5 sacks. The Naperville., Ill., native was named a second-team All-MAC selection this season, recording 17 tackles including three for loss and a sack in the Huskies’ six games this season. Kramer entered the transfer portal in January, and committed to Temple in February. He then decommitted from the Owls in March.…

In his first spring as Indiana’s defensive coordinator, Charlton Warren didn’t have to worry much at all about installation. The defense is what the defense has been since head coach Tom Allen was hired as DC under Kevin Wilson in 2016 — a 4-2-5 formation with shifting responsibilities in the defensive backfield that make the Hoosiers difficult to prepare for. Warren didn’t have to teach any X’s and O’s, so he spent his first 15 practices instead working on the basics. “You saw a group that really focused on fundamentals and technique,” Warren said in a Zoom press conference Wednesday.…

Mike Roberts is leaving his alma mater to join back up with his last boss before Archie Miller. According to a report by Jeff Goodman from Stadium, Roberts will join Wes Miller at Cincinnati as an assistant coach. Roberts had worked under Wes Miller for eight years as an associate head coach at North Carolina-Greensboro before joining Archie Miller’s staff at Indiana prior to the 2019-20 season. Indiana had announced that Roberts would be kept on by new head coach Mike Woodson as an assistant athletic director for basketball administration, an off-court position that would have put him under the…

The initial whirlwind is over, and a little over three weeks after the hiring of Mike Woodson as head coach, Indiana has what appears to be a final sense of the personnel it will bring in to the 2021-22 season. The Hoosiers have their full assistant coaching staff in place, a number of off-the-floor positions filled and a new behind-the-scenes heavy hitter in Thad Matta, the long-time Ohio State head coach who is now the associate athletic director for basketball administration. Of the seven players who entered the transfer portal, they kept four and lost three. They added two outside…

Every season Miller Kopp was at Northwestern, he relished the games the Wildcats played at Indiana. The Hoosiers might not have been at the level they were in their heyday, but that didn’t take away from the atmosphere when he got to play in Bloomington. He frequently did well against Indiana as well. In this season’s game in Bloomington, Kopp scored 13 points, hitting 3 of 4 3-pointers and 5 of 6 field goals. He also scored 12 points at Indiana in the 2020 meeting. “It was just the culture,” Kopp said. “The energy around the program and the support…

Tamar Bates is an obvious fit for Indiana because he can shoot, and the Hoosiers need nothing more than they need shooters. Under newly-hired head coach Mike Woodson, they are trying to run a four-out, one-in offense, and to do that, they need 3-point shooters to keep the floor spread. They ranked last in the Big Ten a season ago with 158 made 3-pointers and guards Armaan Franklin and Aljami Durham, who were responsible for 74 of those, transferred out. If Bates could contribute nothing other than more 3-point shots, that alone might be worth the scholarship. But according to…
