A look at the late spring and summer recruiting calendar for the IU basketball staff

For the first time this year, new IU basketball coach Darian DeVries and his assistant coaches are allowed to hit the road this weekend and watch high school recruiting targets in person at non-scholastic events.

Today through Sunday (May 16-18) marks the first “evaluation period” or “live period” on the NCAA’s recruiting calendar for Division I men’s basketball coaches.  It’s the only live period during the spring.

This is the blocking and tackling portion of the recruiting calendar, where DeVries and his main assistants — Kenny Johnson, Rod Clark, and Drew Adams (and others on staff as needed and permitted) — will indicate their level of interest in high school prospects and evaluate them by watching them in person.  Direct in-person contact with the players is not allowed during these events.

Because IU’s staff has been focused on the transfer portal and getting their arms around 2026 targets, expect the rising senior high school class (2026) to be the main area of focus at national events, especially in the early live periods.

DeVries and his assistants will focus their energy at the national shoe circuit events this weekend and in July.  Some of the main shoe circuits have already started.  Here are their remaining schedules for the spring and summer:

    NIKE EYBL

    • Session 2: Memphis, Tenn. – May 16-18
    • Session 3: Kansas City, Mo. – May 23-25
    • Session 4: Augusta, Ga. – July 10-13
    • Peach Jam: July 15-20

    ADIDAS 3SSB

    • Session II Council Bluffs, IA – May 16-18
    • Session III Rock Hill, SC – July 9-13
    • adidas 3SSB Championships Ladera Ranch, CA, July 17-20

    UNDER ARMOUR

    • Session II Hamilton, Ohio, May 16-18
    • Session III Emerson, Ga., July 10-13
    • Final Bedford Park, Ill. July 18-20

There are additional live periods in June and July that allow the coaches to focus on high school team events, and then circle back to the national AAU events, respectively.

Some of the more popular in-state high school events in June the IU coaches often attend include the Charlie Hughes Shootout (June 20-22) and the IBCA Showcase (June 27).  IU is also expected to host several regional high school programs at their team camps in Bloomington June 7 and 14.

The remaining live periods when the staff can watch prospects in person for the rest of the summer are as follows —

    • June: 11-12, 20-22, 27-29
    • July: 10-13,17-20

On campus and in-home visits are typically allowed throughout the spring and summer except for a few “dead period” windows.
